Free Text Cleaner for Better Search Results - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

The takeaway: If you are copying and pasting content from Microsoft Word into your website, use this FREE text cleaner (below) to clean your text. (takes seconds) Why is this important? Because copying and pasting directly from MS Word can leave nasty little characters that: 1) Look freaky to your viewers 2) Prevent Google from giving you great results Although I wrote about cleaning your text a while back I continue to notice that many folks are struggling with having weird characters appear in their websites due to Microsoft formatting madness. (not to mention that in the background Google is prevented from seeing your content) So I’m posting our TEXT CLEANER directly in this article: This text cleaner will clean the following nasty characters when copying and pasting from a Microsoft® Word document, into your website: “Double Quotes” | ‘Single quotes’ | Ellipsis … | em-dash — | trademark ™ | registration trademark ® Paste in original MS Word Text: Clean the text Copy this clean text and paste into your website For those folks who are using

Help Someone Out on Facebook (takes 60 Seconds) - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Know someone who is looking for work or maybe their business is suffering? I think we all do Times are obviously tough, but do you realize the you have the power to absolutely help others find work and/or potential customers on Facebook? If you’re efficient you can do all 3 within 60 seconds. (and seriously… who doesn’t have one minute within a day to help a friend?) These may seem like litte obvious things, but you might not realize what’s going on in the background, how it can help for future updates or who will be benefiting from your actions. Here are very simple yet effective ways to help: 1) The Easiest: Simply “Like” their Business Page – Visit Page – Click “Like” Remember, when you click that button, you’re not just “Liking” a page… you are actually subscribing to that business feed, which means you’ll see future updates from that page. Why is this important? Because each time you communicate with that page (like, comment & share, etc) you’ll be openly doing this in front of *your network* of friends. And to your business owner friend, that’s huge! And conversely, wouldn’t you want your network of friends to see something that may be of interest within that friend’s business? 2) The 2nd Easiest: “Share” Their Page – Visit Page – Go to bottom left of page – Click Share Link – Key in some nice words in the pop-up – Click Share Button This is a great thing to do for your friends business, because you put a personal spin on the share when you leave a brief message along with it. And if you can “TAG” the person within your share (key in @your-friend’s-name and make sure to wait for the dropdown menu with friend choices) – Facebook will automatically send them an email and they’ll most likely respond right back – maybe even do something nice in return? ;) 3) The Best: “Recommend” a Business – Visit Page – Look towards top-right of page – Enter Text in “Write a recommendation…” field – Click Enter Key Testimonials are absolutely huge on the web. If you *really* have done business with someone and you were happy with the service, let the world know about it. Note: Only users who list themselves as living in the same city or otherwise within roughly 12 miles of your business will see the Recommend Link. So go help someone you know today using Facebook… it’ll just take a minute out of your day. And I’ll let you in on a little secret… shhhh, are you listening?? (paying it forward in the social world goes a long way and often comes right back to you) =) Wanna be even MORE HELPFUL? Then,

It is the usability and utility, not the visual design that determines the chances of success and failure of a website. How to pitch a website to someone who already has a website

by Marc Carson @ Marc Carson Web Design - Ukiah, California

I get a lot of interest on this topic, usually from well-meaning people in Lahore or West Bengal who would like very much to turn a few emails or cold phone calls into some quick coin.

I personally don’t think that sort of tactic is a very good idea, first of all because cold calls tend to bring out cold clients (do you really want to serve someone who only cares about cheap?). In addition, businesses built around a cold-contacting sales machine may even be taking advantage of their sales employees, something I’ve witnessed myself in the past.

But I’m going to give some tips anyway, because if your job is cold-contacting people, you deserve all the breaks you can get. I did that sort of thing long ago and it really, really sucks.

The tips:

  • People usually know what’s wrong with their existing website
  • People are not hiring a website. They’re hiring a person to build a website.
    • Do they know you?
    • Do they trust you?
      • If not, it does not matter how bad their current website is.
  • Demonstrate that you actually care.
    • Know their existing website
    • Get an idea of things like upcoming events: For example, are they busy preparing for an upcoming gala or fundraising activity?
  • If you only have a few minutes (in-person contact or medium-length phone call), your failure rate is going to be really high.
    • If you only have a few seconds (email or brief phone call), your failure rate is going to be really, really high. Just understand that and accept it as normal.
      • No single sales tip will work with everyone, so you should find out what tends to work for you given a group of people.
  • Experiment
    • Try doing a couple minutes of website-research (reading their website) for one set of potential customers, then try doing 10 minutes of the same research for another set (for a set size around 20-30)
      • How did the results compare?
      • Did you notice any difference?
    • Try contacting customers of a specific field. Get to know that one field very well. Know what they need to sell, and how to sell it.
    • Try listening and asking questions more than you normally do.
    • Try to be candid about your weaknesses. For example, “I’m new to your culture and I have a funny accent, so I’m sorry if this is unusual. But looking over your website, I had some ideas for you. Your peer organizations are doing outreach using website features like X or Y, have you thought of doing those things with your website?”
  • Everyone is selling something. What does the customer need to sell, and how can you help them sell it? Can you figure that out before you talk to them?
  • Remember: You must actually care. If you don’t care, you will seem like a sales robot. If you do care, it will show in your communication.
  • If your sales organization has really bad performance metrics, like number of sales calls per hour, ask around and find a place that doesn’t do that. They are shooting themselves in the foot.

Why You Might Want Your Next Computer to be a Google Chromebook - Daveworks Web Development

Why You Might Want Your Next Computer to be a Google Chromebook - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Why You Might Want Your Next Computer to be a Google Chromebook In my business, I’m constantly asked “What kind of computer should I buy?” I usually start blathering about tech specs, needs etc., which normally bores people who just want a simple answer. So I’ve stopped doing that. Most folks just want a computer that WORKS! So, here it is: Are you thinking of getting a new laptop for yourself? Maybe a gift? You might want to check out the Chromebook. Note: Some some of the below links are affiliate-based. All are products and services with which I have personal experience. I am recommending them because I feel they are both useful and helpful… not because of any possible commission. Truly, //D Here’s why you should check out the Chromebook: It’s Affordable The Chromebook retails between $199 – $500, depending on specs. Yep, pretty darn cheap compared to anything else out there. (I have this HP Chromebook) It’s Fast! (even boots in 8 seconds) Nope, I’m not kidding, I couldn’t believe it myself when I first heard about it, but it’s true. (proof below) This computer really is a workhorse. I turn it on, it opens Chrome and I’m off and running. It’s perfect for the Web This computer is all about the web… you open it and start browsing. Read the news, check your email, update your Facebook status… it’s virtually limitless. Or maybe you even want to start blogging… if so, look no further. You’ll Never Lose Your Work It doesn’t have a hard drive. WHAT?? Yep, all your work is saved out in the cloud (Google Drive – AND YES, YOU CAN ACCESS AND EDIT OFFLINE) And yes, it also has a “downloads” folder for files you download. This might sound scary at first, but let me put it to you like this: Would you rather have your 1 hard drive fail (and they always do after a few years) or have your work automatically backed up out on *many* Google servers? Is it secure? In short, YES, VERY. You Can Open and Edit Most Every Microsoft File Type Yep, Excel, Word, PPT, and many more file types your Chromebook (via Google Drive) can open, view and with a small conversion, edit and share the files. But you don’t really need Microsoft at all any more. Google provides everything you need to be productive: Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Contacts, Task List, Chat, G+ Video Hangouts, Google Voice, Wallet… the list goes on. Oh yeah, with Google, most everything is FREE with a massive amount of storage. And you’ll always have the latest and greatest software automatically updated. Quick overview of the Chromebook: Proof the Chromebook Boots 8 seconds: Chromebook Specifications: (My HP 14″ Chromebook) 14” 200 nit display with 16:9 aspect ratio 0.81 inches thin – 4.08 lbs / 1.85 kg Up to 9.5 hours of active use New Intel Processor 100 GB Google Drive Cloud Storage2 with 16GB Solid State Drive Built-in dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n HP TrueVision HD Webcam 2x USB3.0, 1x USB2.0 Full size HDMI Port Bluetooth®4.0 Compatible T-Mobile 4G connectivity (optional) What you can do offline on a Chromebook: Read and write emails with Offline Gmail Write a note or make a list with Google Keep Write and edit documents with Google Docs View and RSVP to events with Google Calendar View and edit photos saved with the built-in photo editor Enjoy mp3 files or movies with the built-in media player Here’s the 14″ HP Chromebook I bought: (found the best price on Amazon) HP Chromebook 14-c050 (Sparkling Black) Amazon.com Widgets Here’s a Saved Search at Amazon. New Coastal Trail Guide App Featured in the L.A. Times

by Marc Carson @ Marc Carson Web Design - Ukiah, California

A recent project for which I provided web development services was featured in the L.A. Times today.

The Coastal Trail Guide app features a variety of beautiful trails along the California coast. I’m really proud of the way the app turned out, and I enjoyed collaborating with Mendocino Land Trust staff to create what should be a really nice experience for coastal trail visitors.

The Mendocino Land Trust team first approached me with a list of needs and later a mockup of the way they envisioned the app working. They also delivered high-quality content for the app, including PDF files for maps, photos, and other assets.

I helped flesh out and refine the overall app concept, after which I wrote the code to turn the collection of pages, links, and documents into a complete interactive experience. It was fun to communicate back and forth and refine the app as we prepared for the final launch.

The Coastal Trail Guide app was sponsored by the California Coastal Commission, so a huge thanks goes to them for pushing to make this kind of technology available to the public.

For one thing, you can create these codes and place them on your store fronts and link to a Google Place Page or perhaps a special discount product you’re offering? Dangers of Using Multiple Domain Names - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Do you use more than one domain name for a single website? Are you certain that this “pointing” is done correctly? I ask because this scenario comes up almost daily in my business and I see folks getting virtually punished for not knowing about nor implementing this “redirect” correctly. There is a belief that having more than one domain name “pointing” (like domains with keywords within) to a website will give your site better rankings on Google. Is it true? No. The end. =) How important are domain names for getting found? I don’t mean to be so short, but the simple fact remains that these days, domain names on their own don’t do much of anything at all. You want to succeed out on Google et al.? Deliver great (optimized) content. (with more emphasis on the “great”) And don’t let anyone (marketing pro, sales rep nor otherwise) tell you any different. They are wrong and I’m not. It’s fine to have multiple domain(s) and *correctly* redirect them to a single domain. But remember, domain names themselves are only a teeeeeeeny piece of what Google is looking for to place your website within their index. Think of it like this: Take care of your customers first with killer content… and Google will reward you. Why? Because you will be operating from the same mindset that drives the Google Algorithm. (help people first) Multiple domains for a brand? Can you protect a brand by using multiple extensions like .com .net, .com & .org? Maybe. That’s a high-level business decision that should be made by the business owner. For me? I feel that content remains king out on the web. Brand – Schmand! ( I’m sure I’m somewhat alone in my feelings for that one) =) Correctly redirecting a website from multiple domains: If implemented *correctly*, (301 redirects – i.e. permanent redirects) having more than one domain name “redirected” won’t hurt your rankings on Google. However, done incorrectly, will not only hurt your rankings but might even get you fully removed from Google’s search index, without an invitation back. Some folks, even after clearly showing Google that a mistake was made, are only allowed back after 6 months to a year later. Why? Because Google hates duplicate content. ( as it should ) One of the reasons Google implements this punishment is to help prevent others from copying *your* content. And because they don’t want to stop making $40 billion a year. Google search business is there to provide the very best content it can find. Period. Beware: don’t ever implement “domain masking” if you are wanting to actually redirect a website (I hate the fact that web hosts even offer this… they should name it “duplicate content for those who want to ruin their search engine rankings.” Hope that helps explain the dangers of using multiple domains for a single website. As always, please share if you care. //D

How to Convert Facebook Personal Account to Facebook Business Page - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Do you have more than one Facebook account? Have you been falsely logging into different accounts for your business? Well, as I’ve mentioned before, you are risking having Facebook shut down *all* of your accounts. Luckily for you, Facebook has implemented a way for you to convert that account into a business page. Why should you convert your (false) personal account(s) to Facebook Page(s)? Personal accounts are meant for actual people, they really don’t meet any business requirements. (and Google can’t see personal profiles) Facebook “Pages” have far more features available for organizations, businesses, brands and public figures. If you have a personal account for anything other than *you* (a real person), it is a violation of Facebook’s Terms. Quote from Facebook: If you don’t convert your noncompliant account to a Page, you risk permanently losing access to the account and all of its content.  Difference between a business account and a personal Facebook account? I’ve written about the differences of Facebook Profiles and Business Pages, but Business *accounts* are created for those only wanting to use Facebook to manage Pages and ad campaigns. The problem with business accounts is that they have limited access to any decent information on Facebook and don’t have timelines and other important features. What timeline content will be transferred when you convert? • All friends and subscribers will be converted to “Likers.” • Profile picture will become your Page’s main images. • Your username will become your Page’s Facebook web address • You’ll remain the admin of any Facebook Pages you managed What content will NOT be transferred when you convert? • Photo albums • Profile information • Your ability to remain the admin of any groups or apps you previously managed (add new admins before converting) *Make sure to download any important content before converting. Can you convert the newly converted Page back to a personal account? You can submit a request for a reversal.Again, it’s against Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities to maintain a personal account for anything other than for you, personally. Sound like you might want to go for it? Then click here to convert your personal Facebook profile to a business page. **just make sure you read ALL of what’s involved *before* performing this task at Facebook.com, here: https://www.facebook.com/help?page=213602951994043 LIKE the Daveworks Facebook Page.

How to Choose a Web Hosting Company - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Tips for saving time, money and frustration when it comes to choosing a decent web hosting company I’m often asked to recommend a good web hosting company, so I thought I’d write a post describing exactly what you should look for when choosing a good web host. First, I think it’s important to understand exactly how a website & hosting works (just 30,000 foot view) Although it’s technically very complicated, there are really three main components that make a website work: domain name website files and data web host Think of it like what it takes to make your cell phone work. You need the following: a phone number (i.e. domain name) a phone (i.e. website files/db) phone service (i.e. web host) Make sense? When I mention there are many crummy web hosts out there, believe me there are… and I’ve used just about all of them. From lousy hardware and servers, cr@ppy software, poor customer support to lack of proper backups, bad web hosts are indeed available to take your money and it’s up to YOU to stay away from them. It is a very important decision you need to make when it comes to hosting your website, so choose a great one when you do. Quick note:Don’t ever try to host your own small business website. No matter how many IT guys tell you that they can do it “in house” do a better job, it’s cheaper, safer or that you’ll have more control… don’t believe them. They are wrong! These days there is no room for error. There are so many components involved in web hosting (some that many IT folk aren’t even aware of) It is far better, safer, cost effective for you to leave it to the pros. So here is an abbreviated list of tips for choosing a decent web host: Choose a host with phenomenal support I can’t emphasize enough how important this is. Sh*t happens on the web and you most definitely will need some help from time to time. Make sure to use a web hosting company that takes their customer service very seriously. Choose a host with the proper web-based tools These tools will allow you to easily make changes additions and deletions to your hosting account. We prefer cPanel webhosts . cPanel is a web-based control panel that allows website administrators (or you) to easily make server-side changes to your web properties. We prefer one host in particular, and I’ll mention why, below. Ensure that your web host maintains nightly backups This means that every five days to backups will overwrite the oldest files. (and make sure to archive these yourself) Meaning download your backups and burn them to removable media ( like a DVD) and keep them safe. How often? as often as you wouldn’t like to have to re-do your work in the event of a hard drive failure. Don’t base your web hosting decision entirely on price Like anything else in this world, you’ll get what you pay for. You should give yourself a reasonable budget of $12-$15/month for decent “shared” hosting. If you need “dedicated” hosting, then you’ll be into the $2500 – $15,000/year range (price completely depends on resources and management needed.) Don’t choose a company with phone support WHAT??? WHY??? Because you get layers… layers of non-English speaking, low-level, time wasting support that will *prevent* good customer service. You’ll find that issues that should take mere minutes can take hours on the phone. Take my word for it to be doing yourself a favor… go for web-based ticketing support Who do we use for web hosting? Most definitely Acenet. Why? Because of the aforementioned reasons. As a web development team, we need great resources for our clients (we like sleeping once in a while and knowing that our websites will be well protected and online let’s us do just that) We’ve used to just about every wrong host in the world and finally have found a great web hosting team in Acenet.  These guys have phenomenal support, terrific servers and uptime, they are reasonably priced and did I mention that they have phenomenal support? :-) Without fail, over the many years we’ve been with them, Acenet’s tech support team have solved most every issue within minutes. (truly) Looking for a new web host? Definitely check them out. You can even have a WordPress site up in just a few minutes. This is just an example of what Acenet offers: 500 GB Disk Space 5,000 GB Bandwidth Host up to 20 Domains Unlimited Email Addresses Unlimited Sub-Domains Unlimited MySQL Databases Loaded with Popular Features 24/7 Technical Support 99.9% Uptime Guarantee 30-Day Money Back Guarantee Starting at $9.97/month Dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processors Kingston DDR2-667 ECC FB RAM 3Ware 9650SE Raid-6 Controller Seagate Barracuda ES Hard Drives Sound Interesting? Check out AceNet right now! Hope that helps… if you have any additional questions or concerns with web hosting, then hit me below. =)

What is Google Squared? - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

The takeaway: Google Squared displays your search results in a table (aptly named “squares”) rather than within a simple list. Using Google Squared is a very cool way to view and organize your search results, arranging them any way you see fit within a grid. This is especially helpful when you’re comparing items for which your searching. You can easily tweak your search by adding additional keywords thereby amending your current table. You can save these squares and even share them via Google Docs. *Pretty awesome if you’re helping your kid with a school report? ;) Here’s a brief overview video from the folks at Google: (narrative a bit gooby, but informative) =) Example Search Using Google Squared: Perhaps you want to know about and compare volcanoes around the world: types, images, where, last eruption, etc ., etc…. If you were to search normally it would take tons-o-time gather the info. But using Google Squared, all you have to do is key in [ volcanoes ] into the search box at http://www.google.com/squared and click “Square it” create a killer table of volcanoes and all attendant info. Here, I’ve done it for you: http://www.google.com/squared/search?q=volcanoes&spell=1 Some of the additional things that you can do to customize your search within Google Squared: Customize each Square to see only the items and attributes in which you’re interested (you can click the X to delete some of the attributes or results you didn’t want) See each website that delivered the information in your Square. Add to your Square by appending new search results (instead of adding rows, 1 by 1) Save and share Squares with others within Google Docs (working collaboratively can be huge!) You can actually help make Google Squared better as it can learn from your additions/corrections/deletions. Over time this helps gradually improve the app for all users, so take the time to clean and correct your work and help make the world a better place. #payitforward (at this point the app isn’t perfect… so you may encounter a few errors. but still worth using) Did you learn something new? Then why not share it? (below) =)

Part 2 of 3: Google’s Algorithm: What You Need To Know As we mentioned in Part 1, Google’s algorithm is complex and changes as new technology becomes available. Google is purposefully vague on the subject, but at one point they claimed to have developed close to 10,000 “signals” and variations on those signals to determine where a page ranks based on the search entered. When it comes to SEO marketing, a general understanding of how the algorithm functions, is crucial to having successful campaigns. Below we’ll talk a bit about...

How to Redirect Your Website - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Do you want to have your website automatically redirect to another site or specific page? (read on) Redirects are fairly simple. BUT you need to know what type of file types you are using (php, asp, cfm, etc.) OR if your webhost uses to “cPanel” you can this without knowing code.(watch quick video) One important note to consider when doing this is to not only think about the redirect but how the search engines will treat the redirect. Most folks want to get (and keep) the best search results they can and implementing redirects can affect those search results. Google and the others look very carefully at redirects to make sure that their results point to valid content. How do implement correctly? “301 Redirects” (The 301 tells search engines that the page has *permanently* moved to a new location and keeps your search engine results in tact) There are other redirect types, but for this post, we’ll just deal with 301s. So What Exactly Do I Need to Do To Correctly Redirect My Site?? Below are snippets of code (by script/file type) to place at the very top of your homepage: (These snippets are for those who are not using content management systems like WordPress. Most likely you’ll need to implement the redirect via .htaccess, either manually or via cPanel) PHP Redirect <?php header( “HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently” ); header( “location: http://www.thenewsite.com” ); ?> .NET Redirect <script runat=”server”> private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { Response.Status = “301 Moved Permanently”; Response.AddHeader(“Location”,”http://www.thenewsite.com”); } </script> Ruby on Rails Redirect def old_action headers[“Status”] = “301 Moved Permanently” redirect_to “http://www.thenewsite.com” end ASP Redirect <%@ Language=VBScript %> <% Response.Status=”301 Moved Permanently” Response.AddHeader “Location”,”http://www.thenewsite.com” %> JSP Redirect <% response.setStatus(301); response.setHeader( “Location”, “http://www.thenewsite.com” ); response.setHeader( “Connection”, “close” ); %> PERL / CGI Redirect $q = new CGI; print $q->redirect(“http://www.thenewsite.com”); .htaccess Redirect You can also do an .htaccess redirect (copy and paste the code below into a new file as save as “.htaccess”) This single file, uploaded to the root directory of your website will redirect all directories and page files from your existing domain to the new domain. Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule (.*) http://www.thenewsite.com/$1 [R=301,L] *Notes: Replace the “www.thenewsite.com” in the above code with your actual domain name. This works ONLY on Linux servers with the Apache Mod-Rewrite moduled enabled. (talk to your webhost to verify) Plain HTML *If for whatever reason (as a last resort) you can only redirect a flat html page, please do the folowing “Meta Refresh” (I mention this because Google doesn’t really like it) ;) <html> <head> <meta http-equiv=”refresh” content=”0;URL=http://whatever.com”> </head> <body> Create Redirects via Cpanel (video courtesy of LearningCPanel)

The Art Of Conversations For Your Business

by Gina Fiedel @ Fat Eyes

What Do Your Customers Need That You Have?

Hint: It's not all in your product or service. It's also in your communication.

Every conversation is a negotiation of energies, needs, desires, style and ideas. A dance of touch and no touch, movements in unison or awkward and misfired signals, efforts to catch up, line up, get and stay in sync.

What is Google+? - Daveworks Web Development

What is Google+? - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

A New Game-Changing Social Network from Google WAIT, WHAT— ANOTHER SOCIAL NETWORK?!? You may be saying to yourself: “I’m barely able to deal with Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter… why should I learn another?” Google+ truly is a game-changing social network that makes sharing on the web far easier with much less noise. How is it a game-changer? Google is the most popular search engine in the world and anything you post “publicly” on G+ is indexed way up there within Google’s Search Results. (So ask yourself: why wouldn’t I want better results on Google by posting on G+?) You can share your insights, links and photos, chat with up to 9 people at once via G+ Hangouts and divide your contacts into G+ Circles. There are also tons of G+ Games and Instant Search always available within Google+ and the G+ mobile version of G+ has made available G+ Instant Upload and G+ Messenger to make your sharing experience easier A quick peak at Google+ Explore Google+ Circles (think friends lists) Within Circles, you can share ideas and knowledge with different people and businesses.. Circles make it easy to organize and categorize your friends in one circle, best frinds in another, your family in another, customers in yet another, and even the town weirdo in a circles all by himself .=) (but they won’t know what circles they are in) Explore Google+ Hangouts (think Video Conferencing, but waaaaay better and easier) Google+ Hangouts are a way of easily communicating with others via video. (watch out Skype and WebEx!) This feature is probably the most powerful within the G+ Arsenal. You can communicate with up to 9 people at a time…. just start a hangout, add who you want there and bam, you’re hanging out! Explore Google+ Games (think time waster – jk!) ;^ ) Are you into playing games? G+ has an entire game room just for you. You can play and share with others who have similar gamining interests. Google+ Search (think search within your biz and personal networks) Hey, remember it’s Google Search… and there is no beter search than that. You can use Google’s phenomenal search algorithm to search your entire social presence. From your friends to experts in certain fields, G+ Search can provide you with immediate results from your circles, news feed globally and public G+ posts. Google+ Mobile (think Google+ on the road) Google+ Instant Upload (think automatic uploading of pics without the fuss) We all love taking photos and sharing them, but pulling those photos from your mobile device and uploading them to the web can be a pain … but with G+ Instant Uploadm it’s automatic so you don’t even need to think about it. Just remembered, keep your loved ones safe by turning off the geo-tag feature in your smartphone. (protect your privacy) Google+ Messenger (think sms/texting/chatting within your chosen groups – *huge* timesaver) Find it hard to text or chat with a bunch of people at once? G+ Messenger consolidates all those separate conversations into one simple group chat, so everyone can converse at once. Very cool! Google+ Sound Interesting? Or, are you not quite ready to join the network and want more info? Google’s New Hummingbird Algorithm Update

by admin-1 @ Noble Image

Google’s new Hummingbird algorithm can be summed up this way: If you’re writing good search engine content, don’t sweat it. You have nothing to worry about. This is the consensus opinion from many SEO professionals. Google called a press event in late September 2013 to announce the biggest update to its search algorithm in 12 […]

Seth Godin on Ads and Ad Blocking

by Marc Carson @ Marc Carson Web Design - Ukiah, California

Seth Godin has posted the latest from his amazingly fresh perspectives on marketing—it’s really worth a read.

“By most accounts, more and more people are automatically blocking the ads in their browser. […] Of course, people have been blocking ads forever. By ignoring them.”

Some of his tips:

  • The best marketing isn’t advertising, it’s a well-designed and remarkable product.
  • The best way to contact your users is by earning the privilege to contact them, over time.
  • Making products for your customers is far more efficient than finding customers for your products.

Holy cow that’s a great little article. Be sure to read all the bullet points at the end.

Love the site… On time and On budget.” – Kim N., Milky Music “We appreciate the special attention you gave our project.” – Jeff H., Docufide “Your team wowed even me with the expertise and attention to detail. Thanks!” – George H., Enhanced Entertainment “Dave Naves. In a few short words, simply the best! I began working with Dave when I was a Marketing Director given the challenge of developing and launching a National e-commerce site. I came at this project with a lot of ideas about marketing and NO web or e-commerce experience. Dave not only built our site but along the way taught me enough about the process to begin to manage & market the site myself. We launched 5 days early and were successful from the beginning. I have since formed my own business and again Dave was right here with me. He built a great site working closely with me and my art director. Again, by the time we launched I was prepared to steer the ship on my own. He still coaches me, but I have a great tool box of Dave tricks at my disposal that enables me to keep the required coaching to a minimum. It is one thing to have garnered the vast knowledge and experience in the ways of the internet and web marketing world that Dave has. It is a completely different thing to be able to take complex concepts and translate them into a language that can be absorbed and used by the average person. More importantly, Dave does this with the friendly approach of a teacher. No question too silly, no mistake too large. I continue to recommend him to everyone I know with the greatest enthusiasm.” – Kerry Blessing, Sound Cinema Integration, San Francisco, CA “Working with Dave Naves is like working with a great teacher or coach. His understanding of how to succeed commercially on the web is expansive. His efficiency is high-you don’t pay for fluff-you get real tangible value. You will find success with him and his associates for web development. What degree of success you end up with will depend on your degree of willingness to be clear about what you want and where you want to go. Dave is also very good at asking the right questions to help you clarify your direction, but you still need to do your homework to have an understanding with any technology driven media. He did his part for us consistently like clockwork and worked well with keeping the project on schedule. By creating a flexible web infrastructure, his work has positioned our site to continue our growth in transaction numbers and ability to handle possible changing data exchanges. The real question will be can you keep up with him?” – Lon Kennedy, NovaCycles.com, Granite Bay, CA “Need a website but don’t know where to begin? Begin with Daveworks and you’ll never look back, or elsewhere, for website-related help. Dave walks you through everything, works at your pace and teaches you to do yourself what others charge to do for you. A website from Daveworks is worth every penny – and you really don’t pay that many of those considering all you get in return. Thanks, Dave, for everything you’ve done for us. You’ve got a fan for life.” – Jette Shears, Placer Self Storage, Rocklin, CA “When one thinks of ‘effective web presence’ and ‘Dave Naves’ at the same time, the phrase ‘walks on water’ comes to mind!” – Richard Hall, Bottomline Lawyers, Auburn, CA “Working with Daveworks was a great experience. While some aspects of web development are confusing Dave took the time to educate us on the entire process. On time and on budget! Great work!” – Steven Achstein, CTO, MyoPower Inc., Granite Bay, CA “Thank you very much for your work on my website. Your company was easy to deal with, your rates were very resonable, and the results were better then expected. You have yourself one happy customer.” – Bret Ervin, ERVIN Sales, El Dorado Hills, CA “Our company recently hired Dave at Daveworks to build our web site. What is Buffer? - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Podcast: What is Buffer? – Explained in Plain English Buffer is a FREE APP that offers a way to schedule your Tweets, posts and any other web-based information you wish to share. You simply fill up your Buffer with a click of a mouse and the BufferApp automatically posts them for you throughout the day. (at the best times for your particular audience) Why should you care about Buffer? Social networks / micro blogs typically work on a timeline, (latest posts on top) which means that *most* of your audience never sees your posts and shares. If you’re like me and can only research and post every so often, then scheduled posts work much better. How much better? By scheduling your posts correctly, you can increase the number of views and clicks by 200%, double your retweets and significantly increase your Klout score. What the Buffer Dashboard looks like: (click image to zoom) How to Use Buffer Essentially, you add the browser extension for Buffer, (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) find any page content out on the web, click the Buffer Icon, which will add it to your Buffer account. Depending on your personal schedule settings, Buffer will automatically send your pages to your associated social accounts (currently Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter) It’s really that simple. What is Google Voice? - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

What is Google Voice? An unbelievably cool way to communicate… for FREE! Google Voice provides a single number for all of your phones You can use it on your mobile devices, (and you can port your existing mobile number(s)) your work, your home and VOIP lines. You can even just plug a headset into a computer, dial and make phone calls *without* a phone! Google Voice isn’t tied to a specific device or location… it’s tied to YOU. I’ve used this exclusively for over a year now and it ROCKS! Very easy to use and loaded with cool features. Oh yeah, I’m also saving about $3500/yr in phone bills! (truly) Google Voice Described in Plain English | The Web in Plain English, by Dave Naves. Previously recorded on KAHI Radio 950AM, August 21st, 2015 Here are some short and sweet videos explaining how it all works: Or, if you just want to go for it, visit Google Voice now. How Google Voice Works: You can choose the account option that works suits you best. Below are the different account types and how they work: Google Voice Number: With this option you get a brand new custom Google number that can receive calls from all of your phones. This means that whenever someone calls your Google number you can set it to ring all of your phones (ex. mobile, home, work phone) or just certain phones. If you just want to use your existing home or work phone, you can get one of these, plug one end into your Internet connection and the other into your phone. Boom, done. FREE phone within the US and *super* cheap International Rates. Google Voice Lite (Voicemail Only) You can have the same voicemail for all your mobile phones. Simply add your existing numbers to Google Voice and then create your own settings, including: personalized greetings, voicemail transcriptions and share voicemail messages. It provides voicemail that feels like email. Here’s exactly how I set it up: Signed up for new Google Voice number Forwarded the old office number for a few months ($28/month – thanks for the ripping me off, AT&T – that’s one of the reasons I left) Plugged in a headset directly to computer to make and receive calls through the Gmail interface Also got my regular office phone to work (not forwarded) with the new Google Voice Number by buying this cool OBi110 Bridge Just plugged one end of this little box into my existing router, and the other into my standard phone Made 1 tiny change within my Google Voice settings BAM, done! Happy with all the features? YES! Ongoing cost? $0 (Bonus!) *note: above mentioned products are Amazon.com affiliate linksGoogle Voice   Features: Google Voice: Voicemail transcription Google Voice: One number Google Voice: Personalized greetings Google Voice: International calling Google Voice: SMS to email Google Voice: Share voicemails Google Voice: Block callers Google Voice: Screen callers Google Voice: Mobile app Google Voice: Conference calls Google Voice: Number Porting Get Google Voice NOW! Use the Tilde (~) When Using Google – Quickest, Most Effective Way to Search - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

The Takeaway: To broaden your search without getting too far away from your original query, use the tilde (~) character before a specific word Wanna make searching more effective, easier and faster? Use Google’s Synonym Search. It’s very easy! While you can certainly make great use of “Operators” like the + and – characters to modify your search, (adds or removes words from your search) you can also make quicker work of this by simply using the tilde (the ~ character) directly before the word for which you want Google to also find synonyms. Example: you can search for “~cheap christmas trees” and Google will also return results like: – cheap christmas trees – inexpensive christmas trees, – affordable christmas trees, etc. It’s really helpful when you want to broaden your search results without getting too far away from your original search. Pretty cool! Have search examples of your own that might help others? Feel free to share below. Cheers!

In one of our earlier blog posts, we explained what Bounce Rate is on a website, and how having a high volume of people visiting your website means nothing when if they aren’t sticking around. Blurred Lines: The Importance of High Resolution Images

by David Hamilton @ DHD – Humboldt County Web Design & Graphic Design

Last month I was working on a poster for a client. He’d sent over some photos, and I wrote back to tell him that I needed larger versions, at least 2500 pixels tall. He cheerfully answered “Cool, I’m blow them up for your tonight and send you the new copies.” To which I answered, “You mean you’re going to get ...

Do Not Use the Username ‘ADMIN’ in WordPress - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Do you use WordPress CMS? Do you log in with username “admin”? I thought I’d mention how important it is to NEVER use that username ADMIN while logging into WordPress. This username often comes standard within auto-installs of this CMS. Leaving this name as is exposes a giant vulnerability for nasty hackers to gain access to the backend of your site. How to fix? Very simple… delete the username. 1) Create new user: Log into your WordPress site > click on users > add new > create new user (with full administrator privileges) 2) Log out and log back in with new username you just created 3) Delete username “admin” Click on all users > hover over username > delete (You will be prompted with what to do with any posts or links created under the username admin. It’s very important that you choose “attribute all posts and links” to your new username) Here’s what it looks like: (WordPress 3.4.2.) Confirm deletion 4) Done Here’s one of the very reasons why you shouldn’t ever use the username “admin” Note: You might also want to try using this particular plug-in: (Limit Login Attempts) *shown in above screen shot* to block IP’s from gaining access to your WordPress backend ( even if the username admin doesn’t exist) Hope that helps… and as always, SHARE if you CARE. =)

Creeped Out by the Latest Facebook Changes? - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Fret not… for below are Plain English Explanations that may ease your mind. Or perhaps make you even more creeped out, depending on what you think about all of it. =) The Takeaway: It’s pretty clear… Facebook users are all here mainly because their friends are here. OR they want to market their company to tons-o-customers. Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, thinks the world should be more “open and connected” (FB wants to become the portal for everything on the web, use your information to allow marketers to push a very personal experience and make a sh*t-load of money.) But maybe all of this “sharing” isn’t really for you and it’s just all too creepy! If the changes are making you uneasy about your privacy: (among the millions of other Facebook Users) Lock down your privacy settings tight! Don’t install ANY apps you don’t completely trust Consider Google Plus as an alternative What this article will to cover: The exact Facebook changes How they affect your privacy How to best protect your privacy. Know this… although every single thing you do on Facebook is tracked. (everything – like footprints in wet paint) you *do* have control over who *sees* it. (at least for now) BUT I T REQUIRES THAT YOU GO THROUGH AND CONFIGURE EVERYTHING (yes, I’m yelling, because if I don’t you won’t read the details) =) So let’s get to it… here’s what has changed on Facebook: Facebook apps: Now they only need to ask permission once THIS IS WHERE YOU NEED TO PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION IF AND WHEN YOU GET INVOLVED! Noted by many, it’s really the most important change in terms of your privacy and the privacy of your friends. Initially, when you installed any apps, you were prompted each time you/they shared info. Currently, when you authorize the app for the first time, it should let you know what it will share about you. If you accept, you won’t be prompted again. (and that is what’s dangerous, because (*maybe* when you’re not thinking about sharing) you want to view stuff that’s private and the app will keep on sharin’! =) #embarrassing. Here’s a great post about how sharing works on Facebook. Timeline: Your Life Story Pretty cool (for some) “Timeline” will allow you to display info about all the things you’ve previously uploaded to Facebook. This includes photos, apps and the places you’ve visited. You can get very detailed within this new app. Here’s the link if you want to get started: Timeline is optional now, but will ultimately become your default Facebook profile. **Remember, consider exactly WHOM you’d like to be able to see this info (avoid the creepy factor) Facebook Gestures: Coming soon – You will have more options than just the “Like” button. “Gestures” as they are named will allow you to “verb” just about anything (Facebook will give developers and partners the ability turn any verbish into a button) e.g.: “read,” “watch,” “listen,” “hate,” “fail.” Pretty much limitless possibilities. Looking forward to this one. (maybe we’ll even help create some) ;) Weaker information has moved to the Ticker (on right) Games, Likes, Farmville, Mafia Wars, etc., etc. have been moved so you can still see it within the Ticker in real-time, but it’s no longer taking up any valuable real estate on your news feed. Watch & Share TV, Movies, Music and News Facebook has partnered with a bunch of media companies including Netflix and Hulu for watching movies and TV, and Spotify for listening to music. Just remember, that if your settings (or your friends) aren’t exactly correct, you’ll be sharing everything you see and hear to the Facebook Public. =) Now Protect Yourself with the Following Privacy Settings Tips and Tricks How to opt out of certain elements within Timeline: To remove individual stories: Upper right-hand corner of story box, select: “Hide from Timeline.” To review all of your past information: “View activity” at the top of the Timeline. To restrict the visibility of your whole Timeline: privacy setting page and select “Limit the Audience for Past Posts.” Configuring Apps and Prvacy Settings: Resources from Facebook.com (Direct links to Facebook Help Center) Configuring all these Apps When you add an app to your timeline, where does your activity appear and who can see it? How can I remove app stories that I don’t want people to see? Does your app activity appear to your friends when they visit other websites? How to stop an app from messaging you Why are you not receiving new notifications from your apps? How to control if an app can publish content to your Wall? How to hide stories from a particular app (ex: a quiz) from appearing in your News Feed? How to unhide stories from a particular app so they can appear in your News Feed again? When to contact Facebook and when to contact a developer about an external app issue? (all info © 2011 Facebook) Sending thanks out to a shrewd hacker for finding a BIG BUG in FB Cookies *article written by Nik Cubrilovic An even creepier version of all this privacy stuff is really what might have continued to happen AFTER you logged out of Facebook, if a great article wasn’t written by a shrewd hacker, Nik Cubrilovic: (and his constant contact with Facebook engineers) “Logging out of Facebook is not enough” Note: Since he wrote that article about Facebook “cookies” (little files saved to your harddrive to remember stuff about you) Facebook has since fixed Hoping all of that was helpful… Questions? Can Only See Facebook Page While Logged In

Facebook Business Page Redirects to Facebook’s Homepage? - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Does your Facebook Business Page automatically redirect to Facebook’s Homepage? Or can you only see your page when you’re logged in? This question has popped up many times from clients in the past few months so I decided to write about it. **NOTE, since this article was written, Facebook has implemented a “log in” pop-up window, (to get folks to either join or log in) but this doesn’t mean that the page isn’t public. (users and Google can see your content) You can simply close the window or log in. If this is happening to your business page, this is obviously bad for your site’s search engine results. In other words if the search engines can’t see it, then your customers (and many potential others) can’t find it either! How to check to see if your page is view-able without being logged in: Make sure you’re logged out of Facebook.com *then* visit your Facebook Business Page. If you can see the page, you’re good. Pretty simple… in most cases it’s simply the “permissions” that are set incorrectly. Remember there are literally millions of different types of Facebook Business Pages out there, each with specific information, audiences and needs. What?? Yes, some FB pages can to be viewed (or blocked) by different languages, ages and some are even blocked by IPs, words and other FB accounts. *Note: Facebook does a pretty darn good job at making their technology as robust and configurable as possible. So don’t complain… just learn how to use it! ;) So, to verify your security settings and to leave your page “wide open” for all to see: 1) Log in 2) Go to your business page 3) Click “Edit Page” 4) Check the most popular culprits of this issue: a. Country Restrictions – uncheck it b. Age Restrictions – choose Anyone (13+) Click “Edit Page” Check the most popular culprits of this issue: Here are excerpts from Facebook explaining some of these elements: Countries: Entering one or more countries means that only people located in those countries listed will be able to view your Page. This also means that logged out users will not be able to see your Page. If no countries are listed, your Page will be visible to people located in all countries. You understand that you are responsible for setting the proper country restrictions to ensure that the content of your Page is appropriate for the country or countries where you allow it to be visible. Age: Selecting an age restriction means that anyone under the specified age will not be able to find your Page in search or on friends’ profiles or view the content in other ways. This also means that logged out users will not be able to see your Page. The Alcohol-Related age restriction sets the minimum age based on the location of the user. Only users in Canada, South Korea or Nicaragua who are 19+, in Japan, Iceland or Paraguay who are 20+, in Cameroon, Micronesia, Palau, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka or the U.S. who are 21+, in India and Sweden who are 25+, and elsewhere who are 18+ will be able to view your Page. You understand that the Alcohol-Related age restriction is for convenience and that Facebook does not represent that by using that setting your Page will be legally compliant in all countries where your Page is visible. You understand that ultimately you are responsible for setting the proper legally compliant age restrictions for each country where your Page is visible. Keywords: You can add comma-separated keywords to the “Moderation Blocklist”. When users include blacklisted keywords in a post and or a comment on your Page, the content will be automatically marked as spam. More information can be found here. Facebook will block the most commonly reported words and phrases marked as offensive by the broader community. Still locked out? Leave a comment below and I’ll have a look. Cheers, //D LIKE the Daveworks Facebook Page.

Part 3 of 3: The Future of SEO and What We Need To Know So far we’ve talked about a new technology called RankBrain, and Google’s algorithm as a whole. But what’s next for SEO marketing? What is Hootsuite? - Daveworks Web Development

What is Hootsuite? - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Podcast: Hootsuite Explained in Plain English Hootsuite Explained in Plain English | The Web in Plain English, by Dave Naves. Previously recorded on KAHI Radio 950AM, August 14th, 2015 What are we talking about Dave? Hootsuite? Who?.. Good morning, Sarah how are you I am good… it’s Friday! It is Friday It has been a week a big big week It has… all over the place So yeah let’s talk about Hootsuite what the heck is Hootsuite? Well, let’s home start by saying it’s a social dashboard. It’s a huge time saver Social networking can be kind of ominous and can be a lot of work. You know if you’re doing it right it ~is~ a lot of work but you know the ROI is there. You know one of the problems that many people have social networking is there’s a lot to remember there’s a lot of different accounts: Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Google +, Pinterest… the list goes on. It grows exponentially…daily it seems it really does I concentrate on the big six: Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and YouTube Those are from my perspective, probably the biggest social networks that. That get the biggest bang for your buck if you do this right. Instagram also is being added soon… it’s going to be part of my big seven. ~In my official list~ But with all that there comes a lot of organization and management and can get a bit crazy with how many examples and how many websites you manage. It has been a while but I can remember when there were a few companies that have created social dashboards meaning a website or in and out there you can go to for free that you can manage all of these social accounts under one single dashboard. So, Hootsuite, in my opinion, appears to be the clear winner in this space. It’s amazing what they have done… over 10 million users now. It allows you, and not only you, but for an entire team securely and safely manage your social space. I’m talking specifically in business now you can definitely use it for personal, but I typically like to talk about business. But you can have team members all over the world help you with your social media management and that’s what Hoostuie is and what it does. They have essentially three different products they offer” The free one or Freemium, which you get to add three social networks. And there is a Pro version of Hootsuite, which you can have up to what is it that I think you can have up to 100 and social profiles and then there’s the Enterprise version of Hootsuite which has unlimited everything. And the Pro it’s 10 bucks a month. It starts at 10 bucks a month the enterprise you have to call because enterprises obviously vary in size. They offer all this that really affordable rates in my opinion. It’s a big time saver. It really is a big time-saver because you can look at a single screen and manage the flow of all this information. And it isn’t just about marketing either. It goes far beyond. I’ve touched on this before but you can do this for sales you can do this for customer service you can do this for for your marketing efforts you can do it to manage your analytics. They have a killer set up set of analytics in there to find out what’s going on in your company. Everyone can have a separate logins and the big boss can check out what’s going on… everybody on down the line can help the company grow socially. And the fact of the matter is that if you’re not paying attention to this you were probably spinning your wheels I fight this spell all the time with customers saying “Dave I don’t have time to do this.” And my answer’s always same, “You don’t have time not to.” This is where business is at. And the future And the future… it’s only growing. So it doesn’t mean it needs to be impossible for you I don’t care how big or how small you are there are tools available so be open-minded about it. This is one tool that allows you to really effectively and efficiently manage your whole social world. And they there’s not too many social networks that this tool doesn’t support as of now. From Facebook Google… will link to all of the that I’ve mentioned. But also one of the apps… they’ve gone a little division in their called apps, where you can actually post to your blog. You can share your specific WordPress blog. WordPress is a CMS tool, you we are going to go over that in the future show. But they have the ability to not only monitor what’s going on in your blog, but you can actually post ~to~ your blog from Hootsuite. For years I’ve been telling people, “no, it’s only a social ddashboard, it doesn’t allow that” I was wrong and I didn’t know until fairly recently. So what you get when you sign up for specific, excuse me when you connect one of your social networks, it’s a process what they ask you is what social network you want to connect. So Facebook, great! Is a personal profile? is it a page? Right, for the business and then so those would be the social note network to connect, now within that they subdivided into into these columns. And the columns are called streams. So within your Facebook social network you get the tabs at the top and from the tab you get your Facebook columns which are the resulting streams divided up into feeds, messages, comments, anything that really subdivides each year and every one of these columns into streams so and that does occur social network which is amazing. And you can even put a column… we talked about hash tags. If you want to find […]

Why is it so important to write a catchy headline? Headlines are often the only information people skim when surfing the internet. Why should they click on your blog post when they have thousands of other options on the Internet competing for their attention? That’s not much time or opportunity to reel someone into your […]

Consider this your invitation to speak your mind. A blog, or “web log” as it was called in the early years, can take many forms. It can be a daily journal that details a single artist’s creative process. Or it can be a twice-a-week update from the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Unlike the […]

How to Prevent Getting Ripped Off by SEO / Marketing “Experts” - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

No matter what any so-called “expert” tells you, having someone outside of your company manage your “Internet Marketing” (man I hate those words put together) or manage your website’s SEO without you being directly involved, is throwing away your money. With every “Great SEO Strategy” there is Google, working hard to filter it out with it’s next update. Why? b/c they aren’t interested in giving organic results to perfectly optimized sites. They want to remain the world’s top search engine (and earn $60+ billion/yr) by delivering top results to sites with the best content. (from experts in their specific fields… not SEO Nerds nor Internet Marketers) LET ME BE CLEAR: I’m not saying you shouldn’t have an optimized site, nor should you not hire experts to you help you build a great site, learn the ropes about social networking, how to optimize content or even pull the trigger for you… you absolutely should. But once you’ve learned the basics, YOU need to produce your content… because YOU are the expert at what YOU do. Show off your expertise by helping people solve problems and publish content about what you know. . It doesn’t mean you can’t hire someone to help manage and organize this for you, but the valuable information you’ve accumulated over the years in experience needs to be digitally published online. THAT is what gets great results on Google. The excuses I’ve heard from smart business people about not being able to write: I’m not good with technology & computers I’m not a good writer I don’t know what to write about I don’t have time My answer to those excuses: You don’t need to be good with technology and computers. You just need to keep an open mind about learning. (fastest, most economical way to learn is via Lynda.com) You don’t need to be a good writer. You DO need to be good at what it is you do Write about what it is you do and have decent experience You don’t have time NOT to get involved The game has changed, and the name of the game is great content. Your customers are looking for it and Google will never filter out great content… they promote it with great search results. (for reasons mentioned above) You certainly could go with just the expensive, shotgun approach with Adwords way and get thrown into the bottom 5 percentile of clickers, but why wouldn’t you spend more time showing customers your expertise and get rewarded with new customers? (HINT) Ask yourself: “How often do I click on those ads compared to the organic search results?” Well, the same goes for most everyone else. Here’s some honest truth: If you want to connect with more customers online and make more sales, BLOGGING and Social Networking are the best returns on your money, time and effort. Is blogging, seo, and social networking hard work? No… It’s very hard work. Don’t kid yourself. But, if you’re organized, plan your work and work your plan, you can be effective by setting aside 1-2 hours per week. (I don’t know many smart business people that wouldn’t give a couple hours a week to truly increase sales as well as *efficiency.*) Is blogging, seo, and social networking worth the investment of time and resources? Absolutely, yes. If you write optimized articles that actually help people solve problems or inform them and share them via social networking (especially something that taps into some serious traffic) you will find that your Google and social rankings go up and sales increase dramatically. It’s really that simple. Signs that your web pro may be taking you for a ride: You aren’t seeing results you were promised Your social accounts aren’t being updated You aren’t given direct access to online reporting or your “expert” wants to deliver static and or printed results. You should instead be given access to a free Google Analytics account (connected to YOUR Google/Gmail account) which will provide more reports than you can ever read. Your calls or emails aren’t being returned or you’re getting B.S. answers to your questions If you must hire some help with your social and seo, here are some things you can do to protect yourself before hiring them: Perform some local Google searches for what you are looking for, in YOUR city and see if they rank on the first 3 pages of Google.: e.g.: “seo roseville ca” If they don’t rank themselves, they might not really be experts Don’t hire someone who uses Google Adwords to rank on Google… they are paying to play and you are trying to find someone to help rank your business organically. (the exact opposite of advertising) Check their testimonials and reviews. (Use Google reviews and ignore Yelp. They don’t offer reliable reviews) Call current and existing customers. Ask them everything about their experience Ask to see examples of their work and search results, but don’t view these on their computers… view it on your computer with a clear cache and private browser. (You might be looking at personalized, cached or logged in results if you view it anywhere else) Don’t sign long-term contracts. If you like what you see and hear give it a test drive for a month or two. At that point you can decide whether or not the investment with a third party is worth it Read proposals/contracts *very* carefully. Some unethical types love to throw in sneaky addendums which can render you helpless if things get sticky. (like you aren’t seeing results and want to dump them) Finally, unless you completely trust your web pro, here are things you should NEVER DO: Don’t give your domain name registrar login info (You risk having your name stolen) Typically the only thing that needs to be done within a registrar is “update nameservers” which is simply pasting in a couple of lines of information your web pro can give you Don’t let your web pro register your domain name for you. […]

Mozilla Firefox Tips and Tricks - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Some helpful Firefox tips and tricks to speed up your browsing experience when using Firefox. There’s also some super advanced / geeky settings for those who are interested and brave enough. Warning: these tricks may cause you to become a super user (ok, super geek) Just be patient, it takes just a little time. (but well worth it) Keyboard shortcuts for Firefox: Alt-Home (home page) Ctrl-W (close tab) Ctrl+L (address bar) Ctrl+R (reload page) Spacebar (page down) Shift-Spacebar (page up) Ctrl+F (find specific word(s) on current webpage – My personal fav!) Ctrl+G (find same specific word(s) *again* on current webpage – My 2nd personal fav!) Ctrl+D (bookmark page) Ctrl+T (new tab) Ctrl+Shift+T (Reopen a closed tab ) Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward within your tabs) Ctrl+Shft+Tab (go to previous tab) Ctrl+1-9 (choose number to go to specific tab) Ctrl+N (new window) Ctrl+K (search box) Ctrl+= (increase font size) Ctrl+- (decrease font size) F5 (reload) or right-click > reload alt+left arrow (back) alt+right arrow (forward) More Advanced Firefox Tips: Click Star in the Address bar (bookmark a page) Double-Click Star in the Address bar (“tag” bookmarks with keywords to organize) Tools > Addons (add over 5000 cool extras to give Firefox even more awesomeness) Click the “/” key and start typing the word you want to find (for an extra fast “Find” Tool) Tools > Clear Recent History (to clear your browsing history for security reasons — especially when using a shared and public computers. Easier option: Tools > Options > Privacy – choose “Always clear my private data when I close Firefox” Use “Smart Folders” in Firefox’s Library, for a killer time-saver: you can create and save searches into folders that are automatically updated as you add sites to your bookmarks and history. To open the Library: Click “Organize Bookmarks” within the Bookmarks menu > Enter your search terms in the search box > Click the Save button to create a Smart Folder. Tools > Options > Applications > select preferred application for each protocol (Open your *preferred* email app when clicking a mailto link on webpages) OK, the über geeky stuff for making Firefox faster. Because Firefox’s default settings are optimized for dialup connections you can tweak out its innards to speed up performance and page loads via “pipelining” (helps Firefox multitask) *Note: be VERY careful doing this! Type “about:config” into the address bar and click enter/return. Note: you will see a message “This might void your warranty!” Click: “I’ll be careful, I promise!” Type “network.http” (not the quotes) in the “Filter” field Find / change the following : (double-click each to toggle the change): Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true” Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true” Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to 30. This will allow Firefox to generate 30 requests at the same time. Right-click anywhere in this section and choose New-> Integer. *Carefully* name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set the value to “0”. This value is the time the browser will wait before acting on the info it receives. Free up some RAM when Firefox is minimized. Type “about:config” (no quotes) in the address bar Right-click anywhere in the window Choose New-> Boolean Type: “config.trim_on_minimize” (no quotes) Set to TRUE Restart Firefox to save these new settings BAM… you’re done! Enjoy a speedier Web. Don’t use Mozilla Firefox yet? Do yourself a favor and download it. (Just downloading it will bring you one step closer to leaving Microsoft Internet EXPLODER, thusly saving you about 30% of the time you spend browsing online) =) More questions? Hit me below.

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Keep your kids safe! Did you know that your privacy may be at risk when you take and post an image online from your smartphone? How Because of the GPS Geo-tag data that is embedded within each image. Why is it dangerous? Because bad people can use this data to track down exactly where the picture was taken via Google Maps. Yep, it’s scary. Local News Report Technical details This embedded data is called Exchangeable Image File Format or (EXIF) Among other things this data can provide are specific details like whether the camera flash was used, different types of digital effects were applied and even when the photo was taken. What makes this particularly difficult to control overall is that most smartphones come with this Geo-tag feature enabled by default. So how to protect yourself and your kids’ privacy? Disable the GPS Geo-tag feature within your smartphone: How to Disable Photo GPS Geo-tag Feature on IPhones: Click Settings Click General Click “Location Services” Select On/Off switch next to “Camera” to OFF Exit settings How to Disable Photo GPS Geo-tag Feature on Androids Open Camera Application Click Menu Click Settings Icon Click Geo-tag Photos to Off How to Disable Photo GPS Geo-tag Feature on a BlackBerry Open Camera Application Click Location icon and set to Disabled How to Disable Photo GPS Geo-tag Feature on a Palm Click the “Launcher” icon Click Location Services app Set “Geotag Photos” switch to “Off” *Note: Some phones have older interfaces, but these instructions should get you close enough to get the job done. How to Make Money Using Pinterest - Daveworks Web Development

How to Make Money Using Pinterest - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

How to Make Money Using Pinterest Previously recorded on KAHI Radio 950AM, July 17th, 2015 Text Transcribed: Sarah: KAHI News Time, 8:45 good morning and happy Friday everybody. It’s that time of the week… one of our favorite times of the week when we have our Web Wizard Dave Naves with Daveworks in the studio it’s the Web in Plain English and today it’s Pinterest and how to make money… good morning Dave Dave: Good morning, Sarah. how are you doing doing well, end of the week Sarah: Yeah always good on Friday when we have the segment because the end the work week and always really good information that you can use and understand so Pinterest, how do we make some money with Pinterest? It confuses the crap out of me. Dave Ha ha ha, Pinterest yeah, you know, it’s probably best to just explain to those who don’t know what interest is as they describe themselves they are a free personalized media platform. so what does that mean? People share pictures, (and videos) that’s what it means… billions and billions pictures at this point of images imagery that interests people, right? Dave: You pin these these pins with pictures that are actually called “pins.” Think of it like having a bulletin board. You take your pin and you pin it to your board. You can have an unlimited number of pins and an unlimited number of boards and its it’s actually very cool. You know, in the beginning I didn’t taste my own medicine and thought “here we go…another social network” and then it took one of my clients to kinda smack me in the face a bit and say “Dave, people think visually.” I thought, Oh… you’re so right. I get. So I immediately, years ago, I joined and I saw how cool it was in the fact that its really brilliant. The business model they have is brilliant because people love looking at pictures. People love sharing pictures and think about it. reading even the comic strip you like it. You like to look at that the imagery and maybe at a couple of captions below, reading you know the comic strip. A lot of people just don’t like reading but they like looking at the pictures. So that’s what Pinterest is about. And one of the things that I teach in in my business is, I’m always trying to make businesses money. One of the things that people might not understand is that you can make a heck of a lot of money using Pinterest… because…and there’s both passive and active ways to do this. Dave: Now, one of the most brilliant moves I’ve seen was made by a company like Nordstrom. They make tons of money through Pinterest. I can guarantee you that every… if you’re in there, on their main account, https://www.pinterest.com/nordstrom, you will see that they have probably every product they offer as a picture on Pinterest. You click once, it gives you a detailed view. You click again, it takes you right to buy it now page. Now that’s active…that’s an active form if sales they use massive traffic that goes on a t Pinterest Sarah: High click-through rates Dave: Oh my.. I mean, if you think about it, they are farming (mispoke: “getting”) their traffic out to Pinterest for free…rather they pay their employees… I’m sure the don’t mind spending tons of money and paying their employees to make it happen, people who were know exactly what fashion is all about.. I’m talking about purses, shoes, anything that Nordsrtom sells is on there. And people click… they like it you click it they’ll often buy it. They make big bucks. So that’s an example of an ~active~ sale on Pinterest. Dave: Pinterest is bound by nothing. People all over the world with all sorts of interests, pin their pictures to their boards. So whether you are in music, you’re in real estate you’re in construction, you’re into clothing or software, its all out there. Many people just pin and it’s fun and you look and you share you share pictures. Whether its gardens I mean I’ve picked up some awesome landscaping pictures off of others’ ideas on landscaping!’ Sarah: Amazing! Dave: What i started doing, something we talked about before… my chicken coop. I post a great deal… a great number of pictures of my chicken coop and products I use within chicken coop. For example I sell ton of these things called founts. These little automated, spring-loaded chicken waters automatic you know, water for your chickens… fresh water. It’s spring loaded so when water pours in automatically from the pipe it fills up and becomes heavy… the spring closes and the valve shuts off. The chickens drink it, it gets lighter and it refills itself again. I’m gonna go to the process exactly how I sell these. I don’t stock anything, I sell them through Amazon. I created a blog post about exactly how I built my coop and included… I have a few different waterers and this is one of them. I took my blog postsand I took that picture of that fount and I posted on Pinterest. Pinterest sends me so much traffic from that one pin and (traffic) comes straight to my page where I explain everything about my chicken coop including the fount… and I sell them… every month. It amazes me… ( I sell) to all over the world. it doesn’t… you’d be amazed on this one little product how much you can actually sell. So whatever you’re or not an expert in, I’m telling you right now you can make a time of money through Pinterest. Here’s the difference though exactly as I said it…(before) you have to have a blog. I does not have to cost money, you can get it for free. You can go to WordPress.com you can have a blog up in about 5 to 10 minutes. (learn how […]

Protect Your Kids with SOS App for Smartphones - Daveworks Web Development

by David Naves @ Daveworks Web Development

Once again, as a protective dad, I felt compelled to post an article that showcased a couple of decent “SOS” apps that can help protect our children. These are fairly self-explanatory, but here’s a quick 30,000 foot view: You simply install one of these apps on your kid’s phone, configure it once and all they have to do is click a single button if they are ever in trouble and need help. Clicking the SOS button will immediately send an SOS message with an exact GPS location (map) to pre-configured contacts. That’s it. I’ve tested the app for Droid and it works great. I must say, having this installed gives a protective parent greater peace of mind.
