Do you own a website? Do you take the security of your website critically? If not, then it’s high-time that you start taking it seriously. WordPress site becomes vulnerable to getting hacked with an addition of plugins, themes, custom codes as well as users. There are certain commercial plugins that might appear safe but in actual, they make your website vulnerable. Furthermore, a majority of popular sites that uses WordPress are also vulnerable. So you should consider the safety issues and for this, let us have a look at some commonly referenced security solutions that you should definitely consider: Backup your website as well as your data: Creating backup should be the number one priority. You should back-up your data regularly if you don’t want to lose months of your hard work. There are many fairly priced plugins and services, so you should not leave your site at risk any longer. You can make use of WordPress Backup or Clone Master Plugin. You can also fix a schedule to backup your site regularly after a certain period of time. Scheduled backups ensure that even if your site is compromised, it can be restored back to its previous version prior to the damage. You can opt for automated solutions like VaultPress, BackupBuddy, BlogVault or built-in restore options via WordPressBackup.   Keep your WordPress up-to-date: Updates just don’t come to enhance user-experience and add new features but additionally, it also comes to reduce the risk of vulnerabilities. You should look for updates of WordPress regularly in your dashboard and update it as soon as a new update is available. However, sometimes the updates are not compatible that causes your website to break, so you should always backup your website before updating it. You should also update the plugins and themes regularly as...

The Difference between Influencer Marketing and Affiliate Marketing

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

A significantly powerful way to accomplish the company’s objective in a short span of time is through an effective influencer marketing strategy. Influencer marketing connects you to relevant people in your industry thus making you gain credibility and brand awareness. Having been in the digital market world ever since e-commerce has gained popularity, affiliate marketing functions differently. It focuses on investing in marketing products that have been created by established organizations and earning profits on the sales made. Your web-marketing plan can be built with either or both marketing strategies weaved together. In order to make the most of these strategies, it is essential you explore the difference between them:   What is Influencer Marketing? A modern method of sharing platforms and audiences with relevant names or experts in the industry is known as influencer marketing. The last decade saw influencers publishing guest posts for businesses, however they failed to generate the enough web traffic on these guest posts. Popular influencer today have a role to play in their follower’s purchasing decisions. For this purpose, they provide valuable content to their audience that gains them the credibility to play a role in shaping their followers’ decisions. Connecting with influencers has become easier with the onset of Social Media. Infact, even a few minutes may be enough to persuade the influencers to share certain content on their social platforms.   The key to Influencer marketing is to locate these influencer and build a relationship with them such that it is fruitful for both the influencer and your business. If successful, in less than a day you’d be able to gain thousands of views for your product through influencer posts. Normally, the influencers will interact with similar target audience as your business but will not have any competing product or service to...

Utility Marketing Part 1: The Big Idea behind Mass Big Data

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

Utility Marketing (n.)—Utility Marketing is a strategy to attract customers by providing them tools or online experiences that answer a need or solve an issue, while aligning your brand with them through shared affinity or values. This is the first part in a multi-series of posts about utility marketing. Through this series, where we will discuss how we have worked with them to design and develop tools to help them with these efforts. However, we will also highlight examples of others’ work, as we reach out to recognize best practices in utility marketing throughout the digital marketing industry. Like any marketing strategy, utility marketing begins with a solid understanding of your target audience and, what attracts and interests them.  You then determine how to align your objectives with your target’s affinities.  The difference in utility marketing is that you’re using interactive tools or unique experiences, rather than static content or direct engagement, to engage your audience. Creating these customized tools often goes above and beyond the call of your website’s main purpose.  Indeed, you may require an entirely new web site, or even something like a mobile app for this purpose. Recent trends show more companies leaning towards creating this extra content and functionality to target an audience beyond simply making a profit or collecting user data.  This is often referred to as “Content Marketing”.  Utility Marketing starts with these principles, but takes them much further by focusing on a visitor and prospect’s individual and subjective experience. Mass Big Data, a state-run initiative of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, is tasked with promoting big data innovation in Massachusetts. The Mass Big Data team knows that their website is an integral part of reaching their audience as part of their strategy to develop a local big data community. In order to build this community, Mass Big Data must become the primary resource people think of when they think big data in Massachusetts (or ideally the United States). In order to do that, Mass Big Data chose to provide an experience on their website that addresses the needs of its target audience: big data decision makers, investors, manager and job seekers.  These stakeholders will respond to something that can provide repeat utility and thus keep people coming back while also referring others to the site. In order to capture one segment of big data professionals, students, and job seekers, Polar Design worked with Mass Big Data to create a unique big data job meta-listing, complete with an interactive and searchable map. The interactive jobs map is a useful tool that targets multiple audiences and provides significant value to keep users returning to the site. The jobs map pulls big data related jobs located across the Commonwealth from a plethora of third party job sites and even company’s jobs pages.  It uses Google Maps API to display them on a map, able to be filtered by job or internship. This helps students easily find opportunities at their skill level – with the highest per-capita big data related graduation concentration in the U.S. the Mass Big Data team knows how important it is to appeal to and retain this talent. A search bar also allows users to search by keyword, location or company. These features allow for a very specific and targeted job search for those who want to work with big data. Students and job seekers alike will remember this tool and come back to it in the future, hopefully spreading the word to other colleagues and classmates interested in big data jobs as well. Within this tool Polar Design also built a Submit a Job form, where companies can submit big data jobs to be approved by an admin and added to the map. This is a great resource for startups and entrepreneurs looking to hire the best big data talent with specific skillsets, as their job postings will be seen by their exact target demographic.  Unlike most job boards, the one featured by Mass Big Data is highly focused and attracting exactly the type of candidates that HR professionals in big data companies would like to meet. Another great aspect of this tool is that it will always be time-sensitive and relevant to the Mass Big Data audience, as it pulls jobs every day from various RSS feeds. While students and job-seekers are on this page, they are also presented with relevant educational opportunities through a side widget. This captures the potential needs of this demographic well – perhaps instead of finding a new job, users will consider continuing their education at one of many listed schools in MA. Finally, the automated nature of the tool, which obtains fresh content from third party sources, is attractive to MBD which doesn’t seek to create yet another job board and, even if it did, would have limited resources to review and manage hundreds of postings daily. The concept of utility marketing takes advantage of knowledge you have about your users and what their possible needs and desires are. Mass Big Data has been able to take this in a great direction with their jobs map, as it draws on a main target audience’s intention to find a job or possibly locate talent with big data related skills. This helps Mass Big Data accomplish its objective of building a big data community in Massachusetts, as it encourages students and workers to return to the site to use this tool, engage with others in the big data community, discover other big data content on the site and gradually think of Mass Big Data as the single most important meeting point for big data in the Commonwealth. Stay tuned for our next post in the series, where we’ll expand on utility marketing and the tools we can help create for clients doing this!

Is Wix a Good Business Site Platform?

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

Enabling even starters to build their websites in an easy manner, Wix is a website building platform which has the drag-and-drop feature making website simple for novices. With multiple templates to select from, Wix offers straightforward ways of editing site layouts for those who are not adept with website building or coding. WordPress and Wix are extensively different as Wix provides a visual platform allowing even new users who have never built websites to build and maintain their own websites. According to claims, Wix is the most user-friendly website building platform that foregoes the hassles of learning program and provides for an easy opportunity to people to start their websites. It appeals to people to be able to build a website with visual drag-and-drop tools and thus, there is a continuous growth in the number of business opting to use wix to build their website. Many starting bloggers and entrepreneurs especially use Wix due to the ease of using the platform. As long as you are willing to use .wix.com attached to your domain, you can set up your website for free. However, you may need your own domain as in case of a company website in order to cement your brand’s integrity. While many new entrepreneurs and bloggers appreciate the idea of Wix, there are also recurring complaints about the service from past customers. The question then is that is Wix only for hobby bloggers or equally well for building business websites? Platform Restrictions While Wix may be incredibly easy to use, it also has its limitations. You cannot change layouts, input advanced platform codes, or set up SEO tools. Also, plugins which are commonly found in web building platforms like WordPress cannot be integrated with a wix website. Even when you choose the additional plug-ins against payment, the...

Community Access TV & Staying Up-to-Date Online

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

Prior to the Internet, PEG stations and Community Media organizations benefited from substantial US cable subscription – station revenues were funded by subscription surcharges. Today, an increasing number of Americans are “cutting the cord” and relying on the Internet for video, information and entertainment. Cable viewership is expected to continue to decline in the coming years, threatening both revenues and viewership. However, Community Access TV stations have the opportunity to bring these viewers back and attract new ones by providing all of their video, news and other content online to a fully-featured website. Many stations achieve more total views than they enjoyed with a primarily cable TV strategy due to the potential of the websites to attract viewers in demographics that traditionally have not paid attention to PEG stations. Working with the PEG / Community Media industry since 2011, Polar Design understands the unique challenges and opportunities that PEG / Community stations face and how to optimize their online presence to maximize ROI. Most Community Media stations already have a wealth of content that could be used to attract viewers through search engines and social media, but it is typically archived on proprietary devices or only made available through other companies’ players and websites. Polar Design’s solution features a full video playback integration which connects to the Video Playback System and automatically publishes pages on the station website from the channel level down to the episode level. Updating video and schedule content onto the website used to take hours of staff time but BCAM’s VOD catalogue and schedule take no time to update as the content is integrated. Additional online features that can help build engagement and revenue among PEG stations include equipment rentals and scheduling, DVD purchases, class registrations, and micro blogs – blogs run by program producers. Polar Design’s services for Community Access ranges from completely customized websites like BCAM.tv to templated websites with our Community Media Platform. Feel free to contact us for a no-obligation assessment of your online communications.

Braintree Community Access and Media (BCAM)

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the new Braintree Community Access and Media (BCAM) website. The Polar Design team developed this new Public Access TV website with a number of distinctive features that both look and function beautifully. The new BCAM site goes above and beyond the standards set in the past for Public Access TV websites with a clean, fully-responsive (i.e., mobile) design and several unique features: Seamless integration with video production equipment (Leightronix’ new VieBit Video on Demand platform) allows all video content to reside at BCAM’s URL and in their database, providing unparalleled SEO and content reuse eliminates staff time spent managing Video on Demand and schedule information enables repurposing of video content as a class VOD catalogue or in a video widget Unique cart-based Equipment, Facility and Staff Rental and Scheduling to streamline station management and generate additional revenue from rentals and production services DVD Store with payment integration Class Registrations Micro-blogs associated with individual programs Interactive video widget on most sub-pages lets visitors quickly find and play recent videos by topic / genre rather than channel or program / show name. Email Integration with MailChimp   Like our other Community Access websites, BCAM’s website integrates with a scheduling and video import system, Leightronix and the new VieBit platform. Our solution automatically retrieves new episode or program information, stores it in the website database and populates that to BCAM’s own website. The process allows BCAM to maintain a robust VOD catalogue on their own site and web domain, with all the SEO and social media benefits that accrue to that, while eliminating much of the maintenance effort that would be normally required of staff to keep up such a website. The equipment rental feature allows those within the community to see the availability of equipment, schedule to rent it, and easily pay through PayPal. BCAM staff are notified of rental requests and go through a process of approval. Micro-blogging gives producers access to their personal blog and individual program pages via the SilverStripe CMS so they can add content and share updates related to their programs. Social media integration is prevalent on this site; within the top menu, social media buttons for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Vimeo provide users with a quick way to connect with BCAM. The ability for staff to add Twitter or Facebook widgets on the subpages give users the ability to see updates in real-time and click to like or follow. Social media buttons are also integrated into the video player itself, making it easy for visitors to link to and share individual videos. The new site will improve BCAM’s accessibility to younger populations with a modern, responsive design, assist in developing new revenue sources, and dramatically increase engagement with the community. Check it out! “BCAM is excited about the launch of our new website.  It creates a great way for people inside and outside of Braintree to learn about us and interact with us.  The new video playback integration with VieBit saves us hours of work we used to do updating schedule or video information, and we’re very happy with the layout.  We believe it’s one of the more engaging web sites in the Public Access industry and look forward to seeing how it grows our audience.” Wes Res Executive Director, BCAM TV

Branding Strategies When Expanding Your Company

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

Your company is expanding; there’s a lot to think about. It’s easy to get caught up in management and finances and let your brand image fall to the wayside. However, maintaining strong marketing and branding strategies is crucial to keeping your business recognizable to both individuals and other companies. It is also a crucial way to reevaluate and recommit to your company’s core values. Recently, our team worked with Lupoli Companies to help them reassess their strategy for the overall company and its subsidiaries. Polar Design created the sites for Lupoli Companies and Riverwalk Properties with the intent of enlivening their online presences. Lupoli Companies needed to clearly state the core values that have made all of their subsidiaries successful, as well as tie together each of the brands into the main company. Riverwalk Properties wanted to showcase their renovated business campus complete with amenities and unique architectural spaces. This needed to be achieved keeping in mind the fine balance between the Riverwalk brand and the overall Lupoli name. Polar Design used its discovery and brand documentation process to assess the current state of the brands and move forward with a comprehensive website design and marketing strategy. To learn more about our redesign strategy for Lupoli Companies and Riverwalk Properties, read our case study about joint branding.

Government Websites Improve Online Communication and Data Sharing

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

The relationship between government agencies and the public is changing rapidly due to the availability and ease of access to big data. With a growing online presence, government agencies are able to connect with citizens, businesses, and the public in new and meaningful ways. Online communication opens up new ways to engage varying constituencies in decisions as well as inform them of the meaningful work and tangible results they produce. This is made possible through presentation of both basic information and large amounts of data, which the public can use to improve quality of life through data analysis, research, app creation, and more. This blog post looks at four different types of relationships the government has with its citizens in relation to big data. As a side – our team decided to write about this topic due to our recent work with a few state agencies, two of which are listed below. Government has unique communication opportunities and challenges distinct from those faced by private organizations. Nevertheless, successfully addressing those opportunities calls for the same rigorous and methodical approach common with private sector web projects. We hope this blog highlights the intersection between government communication methods and needs with our tested framework for crystallizing communication. Community/Networking – Mass Big Data One way to effectively share data as a government entity is to create a community via a well-designed and customized website. Mass Big Data has done this recently with the help of Polar Design, creating a platform that encourages networking and community building around the big data they provide. People interested in and involved with large data sets are encouraged to meet up for hack-a-thons or conferences that promote both professional connections and meaningful innovation. The 37 Billion Mile Data Challenge brought great minds together to “delve into a vast new set of anonymous vehicle-use data and to produce innovative visualizations, applications, and insights on the Commonwealth’s transportation system.” Participants ended up creating multiple projects, from interactive maps to infographics, tables and reports. These projects aim to educate and raise awareness of how Massachusetts residents use cars in order to reduce the impact on traffic and the environment. Mass Big Data also utilizes a unique jobs board we created that pulls big data jobs from multiple web sites, as well as an industry map which is of interest to people looking into big data vendors, partners or potential investments. These features further reinforce the community that we’re helping Mass Big Data build. Polar Design was also able to support their ad hoc initiative Tech Trek, a multi-day opportunity for local computer science, math, and entrepreneurship college students to meet with industry leaders at Boston tech companies. The SilverStripe CMS platform we use allowed us to easily create a landing page with special content for this event, which is a key part of maintaining a successful online presence that engages users with fresh functionality. Crowdsourcing – Street Bump Not only is government providing easier access to data, it is also taking advantage of the reverse and crowdsourcing data from its constituents. The app StreetBump, created by the Boston Mayor ’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, illustrates this well. Residents of Boston can download this app, turn it on at the beginning of their car trip, and the app records bumps it senses to be potholes. This data is sent to the city of Boston, which they can use to determine immediate issues as well as create strategies for long term road upkeep and repair. Leveraging the power of smartphones, the large amounts of data they can collect, and the ability to sort through this data quickly is a great strategy for cities. This app reduces the amount of random surveying of roads and instead allows the city to target specific problem areas when deciding what project to address next. This saves the city money in worker salaries, transportation vehicles and gas, and reduces inefficiencies. Piloted in Boston, it is now running in multiple cities across the U.S. Within a short time after launching, the city of Boston was able to determine a crucial pattern with this data: the largest number of bumps recorded were not potholes, but castings. Castings refer to any cast-metal feature on roads such as manholes and grates. The issue with this is that these are not owned by the city, but by utility companies. Boston sprang into action and made a deal with utility companies, so that now if these companies want to work in the winter, when it’s harder to complete construction jobs, they are required to repair a certain number of castings per year. As of April last year, 175 had been fixed. Educating Stakeholders During this emergence of government-provided big data, it is important to ensure that data gets used in as many effective ways as possible. Government websites that supply large amounts of data need to educate stakeholders as to how this data is gathered, updated, and the ways in which it can and should be used. Healthcare data, for example, can be useful for the public as long as government agencies organize it in meaningful ways and educate users as to where this data comes from. For example, publicly available information such as MA Hospital Profiles Data allows residents of Massachusetts to look at hospital demographics, services, relative price, and financial performance. This information is organized in ways that make it meaningful and useable by the public. Access to this data can help the public make informed decisions about which hospitals are the right choice for their specific needs or see trends in Massachusetts hospital care that are worth doing more research on. The MA government knows this kind of information is helpful, and so creating a website where stakeholders can easily understand and access healthcare data is crucial in keeping MA healthcare one of the best in states across the country. Connecting – Mass CEC The last kind of interaction between government and the public is one where the government website serves as […]

10 Actionable Content Marketing Tips for 2017

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

If you’re a part of any business in 2017 and you are trying to market it, you most certainly need to know the importance of content. There are plenty of effective ways to use content to market small businesses in different industries. But most of these ways have certain hacks which ensure that the content which finally goes out in the market for your business, is not only high quality but also interesting and engaging. Promote the Blog Content on Facebook, but intelligently If you’re going to create a standalone blog for your business, you probably would also want to have a Facebook page to drive traffic to both your blog and website. The most popular social media platform can help you promote your content and grow your audience, if you use effective tactics and ensure to use these tactics in your content creation and marketing. Have a Unique Social Media Strategy There are also some lesser-known ways you can promote your business on social media. One of them is to have a unique social media strategy. In the environment of so much noise around you, it is extremely important that your content and strategy creates a distinct image for itself. Hence, refer to all tactics available in the sphere but ensure you create your own strategy at the end which is customized to your offering. MA Healthcare Website CHIA’s Redesign Offers Better Data Access

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

Polar Design is very pleased to announce the launch of its most recent site, created for the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA), an agency of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In a previous blog post, we discussed a few of the innovative ways that government websites are reaching out to their stakeholders. CHIA is one such government agency: their new website aims to present their vast and varying data sets in ways best suited to each of their target audiences. In addition, the redesign needed to provide ease of navigation and clear calls-to-action in order to help any user find what he or she is looking for. When discussing the goals for this new healthcare website with CHIA, Polar Design realized that first and foremost, CHIA was a data-driven organization, and thus, had the unique need of presenting and managing their myriad data efficiently.  The principal challenge in this case was this: the data defied simple categorization. Collaborating together, the Polar and CHIA teams came up with a “Stories” approach wherein the site would be comprised of three audience-specific channels. The main channel, Info, serves as an introduction to the many facets of CHIA’s offerings. The Data channel serves as the stepping stone to accessing many different types of data, and the Admin channel provides users with information on CHIA as an agency.  The Info channel in particular allows cross linking of articles and data between the “Stories” thus providing different visitors with different search strategies easy access to information that does not always fall into a neat heirarchy. This innovation in structure helps organize CHIA’s offerings and give each of its audience types the direction to find the information they want. For example, researchers and those in academia want to access data on various topics. The Data channel breaks down CHIA’s available data via sections such as hospitals, payments and expenditures, costs reports and finance, etc. For healthcare providers and insurance companies, some of this data will be relevant, but they will also want to visit the Info channel to see CHIA’s analysis on the MA healthcare landscape including costs, quality and access to care. Legislators and policymakers will probably focus more on key bits of information rather than entire datasets, so the Info and Admin channels are most useful to them. Overall, the breakdown of channels and “stories” within those channels gives CHIA the opportunity to effectively reach each of their audience types. Beyond presenting the data, CHIA needed a robust yet easy way to manage their data on a regular basis. To address this, Polar Design implemented SilverStripe as their Content Management System, thus allowing the CHIA team direct access to an easy-to-navigate backend interface. The CHIA admin can update content such as photos and text, create pages, rearrange the site tree, and upload new datasets at any time. This ability to make changes directly and update them in real time gives CHIA a freedom with their site that many organizations do not have. It allows the website to stay relevant and accurate without requiring external resources or additional costs to the organization. SilverStripe CMS was the best way to create a quality site capable of handling CHIA’s large amount of information while also allowing for flexibility and ease of use. CHIA and Polar Design also felt it was essential to create a site that looked clean, professional and engaging. Polar Design knew it was important to construct a responsive design for the site, which means that the CHIA site is accessible on mobile, tablet, and all desktop resolutions. Responsive design has been proven to retain more site visitors than non-responsive design, and given the range in audience members, was an important factor is developing the website. Furthermore, the design and colors are crisp, easy to understand, and draw the user in. Website visitors will find the design of this site very appealing.

Powerful Content Marketing for Community Media / PEG TV

by Mark Jaklovsky @ Polar Design

Community Media centers, also referred to as Public Access or PEG TV stations face a critical era as “cord cutting” (the trend of cable TV subscribers to cancel their subscriptions in favor of viewing content online) continues.  Because Community Access / PEG TV stations potential revenue ultimately depend on FCC levies assessed on subscriptions, this drop in recent years gradually is forcing these organizations to develop new sources of community support and diversify their revenue streams.  Solutions include corporate sponsorships, e-commerce sales, memberships, classes, equipment rental, greater support from local municipalities and other sources.  In all cases, a Community Access center’s success in developing new revenue streams depends on how well it can engage the local community. This is where Community Media Platform (CMP), Polar Design’s unique Software as a Services (SaaS) solution helps.  By making it easy for Community Access web sites to draw their video meta data from their video playout systems into their web sites, CMP makes it possible for centers to publish their extensive collection of video as well as schedule information to multiple pages on their own web sites.  This leads to better search engine visibility, improved user experience and greater visibility in social media as well. Our CMP solution is assisting Community Media centers like Lower Cape TV automate publication of their rich content online, which is increasing awareness and attracting visitors to their website at a much higher rate.  Increasing mindshare in the communities that they serve will empower Community Media centers like Lower Cape TV and open up opportunities to diversify revenue, gain additional support and counter the trends of cord cutting. The Horizon Interactive Bronze award in the Experimental / New Technology category given for the Lower Cape TV website further validates our vision and faith in the power of emerging technologies like CMP to secure the future of Community Media centers and Public Access broadcasting.

10 SEO Blunders Business Owners make on their Websites

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO can be rather tricky for new and old business owners alike. It is a challenge which when left unattended might hamper your website growth and rankings. With Google having changed how its search algorithms function recently, it is more likely to favor a mobile friendly website in its ranking driven by user behavior. Prevent your SEO strategy from going wrong by focusing on omitting these common SEO blunders most business owners tend to commit Irrelevant Anchor text links The clickable hyperlink text on a web page is known as Anchor text. It serves as food for search engine crawler and is hence a coveted skill if the links are phrased cleverly. It is best to avoid wasting opportunities by attempting to build a link with text like ‘click here’. While it can be incredibly tedious to understand and build anchor text links that include important keywords for better ranking, it is even more important that the anchor text is tailored to avoid suspicion from Google.   Links from non-credible sources Just to have links to and from your sites is not enough. It is important to focus more on quality of building links than simply increasing the quantity. A backlink from an authoritative blog may be a milestone for your ranking and traffic, giving it a major boost. On the contrary, a hundred or even more links from directories might be easy to score but these low quality sources play little or no role on your rankings, if not negative. It is hence best to focus on building links for your website from sources that have a positive image in the similar niche or industry thus helping you land better rankings for your website.   Avoiding Analytics Another blunder most people perform is to entirely...

Community Media TV Blog Series Part 2: SEO

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

Our previous blog post in this series, and within the unique and specific context of a community media center’s online presence. First, a quick primer on SEO. How high a web site ranks in searches and how many different search terms cause a web site to appear in the results are directly correlated with traffic from search engines to a web site.  Taking Google’s SEO algorithm, which uses over 200 factors for ranking pages, we can start with the three principal factors involved in ranking a web page: how content rich a web site is, how many pages link to a website and how frequently it the web site’s content is updated. Fresh content shows Google that the website is up-to-date, increasing its relevancy within rankings. Websites with only a few pages are considered “weak” and irrelevant – a high number of pages can contribute to a higher search ranking. More content also attracts sharing in social media or linking from other web sites and blogs, which also factor into Google’s equation. User engagement is an often overlooked factor when it comes to SEO – something that is measured passively by Google and other search engines through a number of methods. It is believed that bounce rate and sharing tools also increase a site’s ranking in search results. If a user clicks to view a station’s video from search results, they are more likely to search around after watching the video, keeping the bounce rate low and increasing the average “time on site”.  These factors would be very low if the visitor were simply directed to another company’s website to watch the video, or if the videos are accessible within a single player embedded on a single page on the site.  Pages that allow user to contribute be it by comments or social sharing have an effect on search rankings as well by creating fresh content (comments) and engaging visitors, thus reducing bounce rates. An SEO-friendly website is extremely beneficial to community media stations as it can help increase the station’s audience. This is because an optimized web site will appear for what SEO experts call “nonbranded” keywords, or search terms that do not include your station’s name or branding.  For example, someone searching for a local politician, restaurant, or event might be attracted to your station’s web site if it ranks well in Google.  Such searches attract visitors that were not explicitly looking for your content and may not even know about your station at all. These are potential new audience members that you can attract more readily than you ever could through the cable box.  With VOD on the site, stations can increase their SEO for no-branded keywords and gain new viewers within the community searching for information about people, places and events that are related to the content they produce. The increased awareness arising from SEO is substantial.  In our experience working with PEG stations and media centers since 2011, Polar Design has seen 100% to 200% increases within the first year.  Some stations have increased their traffic by 500% or more by capturing visitor’s email addresses and engaging them on an ongoing basis Polar Design’s community media solutions are incredibly SEO friendly. Our video on demand tool integrates with leading video playback solutions like Leightronix, CASTUS, TelVue, Tightrope and others. The content management system pulls video content, embed codes, program names, episode names and numbers, descriptions, channels, categories, program air dates, thumbnails, and more from the video playback RSS and automatically adds it to the website. This process creates hundreds of SEO-friendly video pages and eliminates hours of staff work uploading to the website. Series: New Marketing Strategies

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

The marketing imperative.  Each year, it gives birth to new buzzwords.  At Polar Design, we’ve witnessed quite a few marketing strategies rise and fall.  The following list is by no means perfect, but provides some perspective on how digital marketing has progressed in our 15 years history: 1999 – 2002 : E-mail marketing 2002 – 2004 : PPC (when even keywords cost $0.05 per click) 2004 – 2007 : Early SEO 2007 – 2010 : Social Media Marketing 2010 – 2014 : Content Marketing Here at Polar Design, we’re less excited by the emergence of new strategies (which is a signal of saturation, declining cost effectiveness and lower ROI).  The exception is the new emerging field of Utility Marketing, which we’ll be dedicating our next blog series to discuss. Utility marketing focuses on interrupting prospects at the point of need.  It asks questions like “what can we do to meet a prospects’ needs” and “how can we align prospects needs with our brand, product and values”.  It is literally and figuratively today’s “killer app” for marketing, because it often relies on apps (or more precisely, a highly engaging user experience). Rather than attempt to lure and engage visitors to a web site with content, Utility Marketing selflessly provides prospects tools they can use or entertaining experiences that also make sense within the context of the sponsor’s brand and offerings. We’re particularly excited by this trend since it restores the importance of integrated agencies like Polar Design that actually build things for web sites or mobile devices.  We believe that as a full-service interactive agency, our ability to conceptualize, design and also develop Utility Marketing deliverables is  itself of great “utility” to our clients. This will be an exciting new turn in digital marketing and we can’t wait to share what we’ve learned in the next few blog posts.  Stay tuned!

Developing Brand Identity For Small Business

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

Every business, big or small, can develop for itself a personality or a brand voice to draw potential customers in better numbers. Your aim behind developing your brand voice lies mostly in making people remember your service or product when they need a solution for a problem. Companies that are able to build this brand image and continually make their consumers rely on their services without fault get rewarded with repeat customers and business.   You might be wondering how to build a dynamic brand identity for a small business? Here are ways to build a flourishing brand identity for your small business   Create a Stunning Logo Visually appealing logos that represent a brand’s best attributes are the most relied option for strong brands. In order for your business to be at the front of the customer’s mind, the logo must be eye-catching such that a mere mention reminds them of you. This immediate reconnection with your brand logo reminds them instantly of what your business represents and what they best like about the services you have to offer.   Stay on Top of Your Social Media Presence The key to building brand identity today is Social Media. You must ensure that your business has active presence on almost all social media platforms to enhance your brand identity. Limited yourself to a single platform is also limiting your potential. You may wish to expand to newer platforms catching people’s attention ever so often. Also, inactive pages tend to be a drawback for your brand image. You must ensure that you keep social media platforms updates with relevant and interesting content that conveys to the customer the best your brand has to offer. The content must always be of a nature and feel that is consistent to the company’s image...

Why Data is Important in Content Marketing?

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

Haven’t we all associated the idea of all types of marketing with creativity, with no exception of content marketing? Contrary to this belief of content marketing being merely an art, it is in fact one of the most data-driven form of marketing that exists. You can track more data of the results of your marketing techniques when opposed to television or radio marketing. You have records for all the visitors to your website and you know what did they do on your site and from where did they land on the website page. It is then up to you to use this data to your benefit. That is where most content marketers fail to perform, in analyzing and optimizing the use of this data. However, if not for the data, you’d never know what about your technique succeeded and which is the better way for you to grow. While it is your personal choice whether or not to use the data, however, it is a vain idea to leave any potential profit unattended.   Here is why data plays an important role in content marketing.   Learn from other company’s campaigns With tools like BuzzSumo that help you know how well a certain piece of content marketed on social media performed, you will be able to collect data about what marketing technique is working for other businesses. With various other resources and tools like Ahrefs , you can collect any backlink data and you would know what lent the success to the marketing technique in collecting links. It would, however, be incorrect to depend only on this data and not on the actual effort put in the content, since that plays a major role too. However, you might be able to figure the type of content and the marketing techniques...

The Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) Innovative Website Design & Navigation

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

analyzing and making available to various stakeholders data on the healthcare in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Its audience ranges from policy makers, to healthcare insurers, providers, researchers and the general public seeking to understand how the Commonwealth performs in key measurable areas such as cost, quality and access to healthcare. Polar Design carefully crafted a website design and navigation that makes CHIA’s health information accessible while demonstrating CHIA’s role in helping its audience understand the complexities of health data and information. CHIA and Polar Design developed a unique “story” based method of organizing and presenting the available information Polar Design executed with an equally unique user architecture and design.  Polar Design integrated an accordion navigation among sub-pages and cross linking via tags to connect the relationship between data and meaning to help visitors struggling to find organization in their own thinking about health information and data. The “story” approach comprised the site of three audience-specific channels. The main channel, “Health Information and Analysis”, serves as an introduction to the many facets of CHIA’s offerings. The “Data” channel serves as the stepping stone to access various types of data, and the “About” channel provides users with information on CHIA as an agency.  The Health information channel in particular allows cross-linking of articles and data between the “Stories” thus providing visitors with different search strategies easy access to information that does not always fall into a typical hierarchy. For example, researchers want to access data on various topics. The Data channel breaks down CHIA’s available data into sections such as hospitals, payments and expenditures, costs reports and finance, etc. For healthcare providers and insurance companies, some of this data will be relevant, but they will also want to visit the Health information channel to see CHIA’s analysis on the Massachusetts healthcare landscape including costs, quality and access to care. Legislators and policymakers may focus more on key bits of information rather than entire datasets, so the Health information and About channels are most useful to them. Overall, the breakdown of channels and “stories” within the channels provides CHIA with the opportunity to effectively reach each of their audience segments. Above is a sub-page under the Health Information channel; CHIA connects relevant information on this page to other parts of the site. For example, “CHIA’s unique data sets” links to the Data channel while “Spending and Insurance Coverage” and “Acute Hospital Utilization and Financial Performance” link to specific parts of the table below to simplify user experience.

Community Media Blog Series Part 3: Revenue Generating Website Features

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

Prior to the Internet, , an increasing number of Americans are cancelling their cable subscriptions and relying more on the Internet for video entertainment. With the decrease in cable subscriptions and budgets, community media stations need to find new ways to earn revenue. Adding engaging functionality to their website can help stations earn money with additional revenue streams. Working with community media stations since 2011, we have seen the most increase in profits with these three functionalities: Equipment and Facility Scheduling This feature provides the community with an easy way to reserve equipment or facilities, and can be extended to allow commercial companies the ability to rent video equipment and services more affordably.  While many stations already provide this service, most do not have an efficient way of allowing user to schedule rentals. Users are more inclined to rent equipment or the facility if they can browse the products and services available for their desired dates/times online in real time and easily make a reservation online. It’s not just reservation functionality that makes a difference, but the user interface and its integration with stations’ web sites. Check out BCAM TV’s Equipment and Facility scheduling feature developed by Polar Design! E-Commerce E-commerce provides community media centers the ability to earn some extra revenue through sale of DVDs and other products. Even if your station’s website has VOD capabilities, many viewers still enjoy the convenience of having a tangible DVD to watch videos on their own television, or to share with family, employers, universities or others. Additionally, many e-commerce solutions can be used to sell t-shirts, mugs, and other promotional items, as well as sponsorships and big ticket items that might be donated by local business to generate revenue for the center. HCAT’s website features a DVD store allowing users to search for and order DVDs. Class Registration Class registration features allows stations to list the classes they offer for students and community members, along with dates, times, and descriptions. Listings classes online improves web site SEO and engagement, and allows those classes to be located by members of the public who are not yet members of your center NewTV’s website allows its staff to easily add classes for users to register and pay for on their website! As suggested by the blog title, these are the top three revenue generating ideas, but there are many more that Polar Design can implement which could provide substantial impact and return on investment depending on your particular media center’s situation. Polar Designs offers an affordable online solution for community media stations called the Community Media Platform – learn more about it here!

Green Park Studios Fabric Customization eCommerce Site

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

Green Park Studios is a print-you-own fabric customization ecommerce site and designer community,  Polar Design built that shows an image preview of the fabric in addition to buttons and dropdowns to edit the customizable features. For example, as a user slides the scale, the image scales as well – allowing users to see precisely what they are ordering. One unique element of Green Park Studios is the designer community. Any users can register as a designer and upload their designs for sale, earning a 20% commission with each purchase. This encourages designers to tell their friends about the website and generate inexpensive, high-ROI referral traffic, which is always helpful for a new company. The fabric store, pictured left, shows the designs uploaded by designers available for purchase. When selected, they load into the configurator, allowing the user to customize fabric type and yards desired. Green Park Studios is competitive on price and delivery time, which is due in part to the high-quality digital printer Lisa owns and operates. In order to assist with keeping turnaround time low, the orders need to be saved in a way that translates easily from the website CMS to the printer. Polar Design developed extensive image processing capabilities as part of the configurator to convert uploaded photos and images into print ready images, which allows for quick file transferring from the CMS to the digital printer.

Community Media TV Blog Series Part 1: Importance of On-Site VOD

by Polar Design @ Polar Design

and chart to the right shows, community access stations’ cable viewership will continue to decline in the coming years, threatening both revenues and viewership. Community Media organizations need to embrace the new paradigm to stay relevant, to maintain their reach, and to open doors to new revenue sources as the once preeminent source of traffic and revenues dries up In this respect, Video-on-Demand (VOD) provides many community media centers an opportunity to defend their audience and even expand it by providing content that promotes social media sharing and search engine rankings.  Unfortunately, most community media centers and PEG stations implement Video-on-Demand imperfectly – e.g., a link to a YouTube page or just embedding a video playback system’s player on the website – which provides no benefit or SEO. To realize VOD’s full potential to dramatically increase reach, it is imperative that stations follow these guidelines: Keep your videos on your own website, under your own domain so that any “link popularity” accrues to your site, not YouTube or your video playback provider.  Another benefit of this is that your videos appear in the search results of your web site’s search function, if you have one. Deploy the VOD catalog to create as many pages as possible centered around your video content – one effective approach is to create a page for each episode, linking those episodes to a program/ show page and in turn linking those from a channel page; additional pages can be created by providing genre pages or enabling tagging Enable social sharing for each individual episode page so that shared links direct visitors directly to the relevant content; optimize the social share button to including its individual show name and thumbnail in any share Ensure that new videos are added regularly to the VOD catalog in order to benefit from “freshness” as calculated by search engine ranking algorithms. If you’ve read this far, your initial reach will be “sounds great, but this is a lot of work and my station is short staffed with a limited budget!”  Fortunately, staff or budge limitations not loner limit community media from implementing these best practices and dramatically boosting visitors. Polar Design’s Community Media Platform (CMP) is a Software as Service based system that integrates your web site readily with leading video playback solutions like Leightronix, CASTUS, TelVue, Tightrope and can be made to work with others. CMP not only pulls video content and embed codes, but programming content such as program names, episode names and numbers, descriptions, channels, categories, program air dates, thumbnails, and much more. The solution then stores this content directly into the database of web sites’ content management solutions (e.g., WordPress, SilverStripe, etc.) so that VOD content is published automatically (or if a station prefers, after staff review). Seamless integration of video playback and scheduling systems with a website’s content management solution allows community media centers to build out and maintain with little ongoing effort a robust VOD section on their website. This includes at a minimum well-organized channel, program and genre pages, along with individual pages for each episode that can be combined with program or episode-specific content to further boost engagement and SEO.  Centers thereby can ensure that their web sites are engaging and totally search optimized without having to worry about ongoing maintenance by staff or contractors to keep the same level of content.

Lower Cape TV

by Mark Jaklovsky @ Polar Design

Lower Cape TV is a community media organization providing Public and Government programming for four towns in the lower portion of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.  With a charter and franchise agreement with local cable providers, Lower Cape TV functions much like other Public Access stations around the country by providing coverage of local municipal and school committee events as well as enabling local volunteers to generate their own video content for the community’s entertainment.  However, Lower Cape TV does differ in three important ways: A significant portion of residents within the jurisdictions it serves are not served by cable or or fiber connections.  Those residents rely on satellite broadcasting and internet access to gain access to local news, placing local public access stations on cable out of reach.  Therefore, in order to fully serve the community, Lower Cape TV needs to provide its significant array of video content available on demand in order to provide greater convenience to all lower Cape Cod residents. Finally, a substantial portion of the lower Cape population is seasonal – namely summer vacationers or residents whose primary homes are located off the cape.  These visitors or seasonal residents nevertheless have an interest in local news from the Cape even when they are not physically present and able to access local programming through cable providers.   Recognizing this, Lower Cape saw an important need to provide residents with access to local information from anywhere, through the Internet, since they are unable to access Lower Cape TV public access stations by cable TV once outside of the area and its cable service.  Like many public access and media centers, Lower Cape TV’s budgets have been limited by a combination of “cord cutting” as well as the reality of public access operating budgets.  These reasons compelled Lower Cape to seek a cost effective solution that would provide video programming online, in an easy to find, engaging format, with SEO and social media optimization while respecting Lower Cape’s budget. Polar Design’s Community Media Platform product allowed Lower Cape to deliver local news and information to remote, underserved and out of region residents.  The solution enhanced SEO and the user experience.  While certainly much more affordable than a custom developed media center website, the solution also saved Lower Cape TV hundreds of hours of effort annually in updating and maintaining with its automated publication of video information from Lower Cape TV’s Tightrope video playout system. Recognizing the innovation in the Community Media Platform product and its benefit to media centers like Lower Cape TV, the web site and technology solution won a Bronze Award in the Horizon Interactive Awards for 2016.
