Cloud Expo Silicon Valley: Ceph and DevOps in the Cloud

by @ Latest News from Linux Containers

Is your IT organization being pushed to increase the tempo of your software release cycles? Do you currently automate application builds and the creation of staging environments? Do you always test thoroughly before pushing code out to production? Does your hair catch on fire every time you put out a new release? IT organizations large and small are turning to the set of processes, technologies, and organizational practices called DevOps as a way to deal with the need to release software more often and with less trouble by changing the way the Development and Operations teams cooperate. In his session at the 13th International Cloud Expo®, Uri Budnik, Director of Business Development at RightScale, will discuss how Ceph, a fully open source distributed object store, network block device, and file system designed for reliability, scalability and performance, is transforming DevOps.

[session] @Scrumdotorg to Present at @DevOpsSummit | #Scrum #AI #DevOps

by @ Latest News from Linux Containers

It is ironic, but perhaps not unexpected, that many organizations who want the benefits of using an Agile approach to deliver software use a waterfall approach to adopting Agile practices: they form plans, they set milestones, and they measure progress by how many teams they have engaged. Old habits die hard, but like most waterfall software projects, most waterfall-style Agile adoption efforts fail to produce the results desired. The problem is that to get the results they want, they have to change their culture and cultures are very hard to change. To paraphrase Peter Drucker, "culture eats Agile for breakfast." Successful approaches are opportunistic and leverage the power of self-organization to achieve lasting change. This talk will share stories of success and failure and will talk about why different approaches succeed and fail.

WebSocket Technology | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #APM #Microservices

by @ Latest News from Linux Containers

Providing a full-duplex communication channel over a single TCP connection, WebSocket is the most efficient protocol for real-time responses over the web. If you’re utilizing WebSocket technology, performance testing will boil down to simulating the bi-directional nature of your application. Introduced with HTML5, the WebSocket protocol allows for more interaction between a browser and website, facilitating real-time applications and live content. WebSocket technology creates a persistent connection between the client and server, circumventing the requirement for a client-initiated HTTP request to trigger a server response. Providing a full-duplex communication channel over a single TCP connection, WebSocket is the most efficient protocol for real-time responses over the web.

PTC to Acquire Axeda to Expand Internet of Things Portfolio

by @ Latest News from Linux Containers

PTC has announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Axeda Corporation, a pioneer in the development of solutions to securely connect machines and sensors to the cloud, for approximately $170 million in cash. “The world we live in is changing around us, and the pace of that change is accelerating as more and more machines, sensors, and products connect via the Internet to their makers, to their operators, and to each other,” said PTC president and CEO Jim Heppelmann. “In recent years, products have become tremendous sources of intelligence as they have been increasingly instrumented with sensors. Until now, manufacturers have been constrained in their ability to securely collect that data and make sense of it all. Axeda’s innovative approach to machine connectivity delivers exactly what manufacturers need to capitalize on the massive amounts of data now available from their smart, connected products.”

@ThingsExpo: Five Ways Cisco’s Internet of Everything Will Change the Earth’s Trajectory

According to CEO John Chambers, however, the new IoE (Internet of Everything) plan at Cisco is set to change the trajectory of everyone on Earth, in both the consumer and the professional arenas. Bigger than anything that’s come before. Now, don’t get the wrong idea: Cisco isn’t going to sell IoE to consumers directly. But Internet of Everything will impact our daily lives in ways we can’t yet possibly imagine. From improved efficiency in the industrial arena to personalized retail encounters to the ability to control an entire building’s infrastructure with one simply smartphone app, IoE means big.

The World of Hadoop and Beyond By @JnanDash | @CloudExpo [#BigData]

Hortonworks went through an IPO last Friday, December 12, 2014. It’s initial price of $16 soared by 60% immediately after. Today the stock price is $24.70 with a market cap of $1.02B. Another billion dollar club member. They compete with Cloudera and MapR in packaging the open source Hadoop platform for customers. How do they make money when the basic Apache Hadoop is free? – by offering added services like training and consulting. They can also add auxiliary products (not open source) that customers must pay for. The interesting fact is that Hortonworks’s CEO had claimed a $100m revenue this year, but looks like he is way short of that – $33m during first nine months. The future is quite uncertain!

ZFS on Linux

by @ Latest News from Linux Containers

On March 27, 2013, ZoL maintainers announced that the 0.6.1 release was ready for wide scale deployment on everything from desktops to servers. Yet, due to lack of maturity and adoption of the ZoL project, maintainers and/or advocates of ZFS aren’t comfortable to run ZoL in production yet. The reason behind the reluctance to use ZoL in production is that ZFS on Solaris took a large number of years to reach maturity and went through ups and downs of bugs related to data corruption and other issues. In the same way, ZoL will need some time to mature as product. It will take about a year to be mature as more people deploy it in production. If developers want to take advantage of ZFS, they can start rolling out less important database servers (i.e. reporting servers, 3rd slave databases) into production and experience the product for about 6 months before rolling out to all database servers. This will give users the confidence and experience to work with ZoL. Alternatively, developers may want to run ZFS on OmniOS because it’s been battle tested for decades now.

The Rise of the Machine: Intelligent Log Analysis Is Here

by @ Latest News from Linux Containers

Application logs contain a massive repository of events and come in many different formats. They can have valuable information, but gaining useful insight can be difficult without the assistance of machine learning to help reveal critical problems. Transaction logs can contain gigabytes of data and come in proprietary formats. Some applications even have separate consoles, and captured events differ by organization depending upon compliance requirements and other considerations. Centralized log management has made it easier to troubleshoot applications and investigate security incidents from one location, but the data still must be interpreted. That often involves complex mapping of key and value structures.

UNIX Migration Alternatives: Red Hat Enterprise Linux vs. Windows Server

by @ Latest News from Linux Containers

As UNIX users prepare to embrace industry-standard servers for production workloads, they have to confront some fundamental choices about how to best match the capabilities that they have come to expect from UNIX operating systems. While both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows Server now have the scalability and reliability necessary to host business-critical workloads formerly reserved for UNIX, the operational practices of the two systems diverge considerably. Windows Server has traditionally been optimized for ease-of-use by providing a highly integrated environment, minimizing the choices that administrators have to confront. By contrast, Red Hat Enterprise Linux is optimized for the traditional UNIX values of modularity and flexibility, giving administrators the option to customize their environments.

[video] The Era of Open Analytics | @CloudExpo @ProgressSW #AI #ML #DX #BigData #Analytics

Cloud applications are seeing a deluge of requests to support the exploding advanced analytics market. “Open analytics” is the emerging strategy to deliver that data through an open data access layer, in the cloud, to be directly consumed by external analytics tools and popular programming languages. An increasing number of data engineers and data scientists use a variety of platforms and advanced analytics languages such as SAS, R, Python and Java, as well as frameworks such as Hadoop and Spark. Cloud APIs are commonly designed to support application integration representing a disconnect with the analytics ecosystem. These combined trends create significant demand for a “bring-your-own-analytics” (BYOA) capability for cloud applications.

Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio breaks down her resistance with various psychological torments, which make up the “taming” — until she finally becomes agreeable. An analogous challenge exists when using predictive analytics with healthcare data. Healthcare data can often seem quite stubborn, like Katherina. One of the main features of healthcare data that needs to be “tamed” is the “skew” of the data. In this article, we describe two types of skewness: the statistical skew, which impacts data analysis, and the operational skew, which impacts operational processes.

Most people are aware that Windows Server 2003 is coming to the End of Support (EOS) on July 14th 2015. This means enterprises are more or less forced to stop running applications on the WS2003 Operating System, migrate them to a newer OS or replace them. EOS dramatically changes the solid "run-your-business operating platform" to one where there will be no security patches, no compliance and escalating costs. There are few events that open up such large security concerns, throw compliance out the window and have a greater than million dollar price tag all at the same time. In one of the Microsoft sessions at the recent World Wide Partner Conference (WPC), they revealed that there are 22 million machines still running Windows Server 2003. They estimate that 53% of them are physical, likely running on old hardware providing a big hardware refresh opportunity as well.
