New Defense Against Hackers with IBM and z14 Mainframe
by Lori Smith @ S&S ProServices
Tue Jul 18 14:40:46 PDT 2017
According to the National Security Agency (NSA) Data Center, there are 300,000 hacking attempts every day across the globe. That is completely insane! It literally means that there are 3.5 attempts every second to breach a security system and obtain information. Many people picture a hacker as a computer nerd sitting in a dark basement targeting a victim, analyzing their system, and then somehow guessing their passwords. Another stereotype is that hacking only happens to big businesses, not individuals, but neither are an accurate assessment of today’s hackers. Most computer hackers are quite sophisticated, with hardware and software that is automated and can scan thousands of computers at the same time, looking for vulnerabilities. They can and will go after anyone, big or small, where there is weakness and opportunity. Many takeovers begin with a program the infiltrates your computer through an email or text. One such program is called SubSeven or Sub7, which finds an exposed port through which the intruder can enter and take over your computer. This article discusses the high tech equipment of today’s hackers: Seven Scary Things Hackers Can Do to Your Computer One of the tools a hacker uses sends out packets of data to probe computers and find out if there are any vulnerable ports available that are ripe for exploitation. All computers have ports that are open when they’re on the Internet. The ports accept different types of data from different sources—think of them as different doors in a house, or boating docks in a busy seaside port. The nasty Sub7 program, for example, is known to use port 27374, as well as others. If port 27374 happens to be running that day, Sub7 will open that port. The port probe then alerts the hacker that, indeed, port 27374 is open for business…or hacking. The hacker knows that with a few keystrokes, they can take control of your computer. Read the full post here: Seven Scary Things Hackers Can Do to Your Computer IBM has been in the artificial intelligence industry since 2005 with their Watson supercomputer. Through developments in AI and IBM’s DeepQA platform, Watson can answer questions by generating a hypothesis, gathering massive evidence, and analyzing data. Watson, named after IBM’s first CEO Thomas J. Watson, originally debuted in 2011 by competing on Jeopardy against some of the previous big winners. Watson took home the big prize, and from that time has been helping solve questions for medical, telecommunications, financial and government entities. In May of 2016, it was announced that Watson would be helping battle the bad guys in cybersecurity. Using the X-Force Exchange, an intelligence sharing platform, this system enables collaboration with research on security threats and aggregation of intelligence information. This video shares how IBM Watson would fight cyber-criminals: It was announced this week that IBM has again raised the bar in the cybersecurity battle with its z14 mainframe. This system enables protection for valuable data and simplifies compliance to regulations by using machine learning to encrypt the data in a way that has never been done before. How powerful is it? It can process 12 billion encrypted transactions per day and up to 13 gigabytes of data per second per chip. Caleb Barlow, vice president of threat intelligence at IBM Security, stated that it offers a “400 percent increase in silicon that’s dedicated specifically to cryptographic processes—over six billion transistors dedicated to cryptography,” This article provides more details on how the IBM z14 will be used: IBM dangles carrot of full encryption to lure buyers to new z14 mainframe | TechCrunch Peter Rutten, an analyst with IDC says all-encompassing encryption is clearly the key to this release. “It’s like a security blanket across the entire system — database, applications, data at rest, data in flight, APIs, etc. — that can just be turned on, rather than manually picking and choosing what to encrypt, which typically has led to much [data] remaining unencrypted,” he explained. Beyond pure encryption, customers also told IBM they wanted this capability delivered in a cost-effective way. Of course, IBM is promising this, and has revealed a new pricing strategy called a “container pricing model,” but Mauri wouldn’t discuss details, so it’s difficult to know exactly how the company defines “cost-effective.” Read the complete post here: IBM dangles carrot of full encryption to lure buyers to new z14 mainframe | TechCrunch The cost of utilizing this new defense against hackers isn’t cheap. It was stated in the Los Angeles Times that the cost was going to approximately $500,000 for new customers to use its newest mainframe technology. Upon looking at IBM’s site, it shows that financing is available, but for most small businesses, this might be a little out of their price range.

New Development For Google Maps – Q&A
by Lori Smith @ S&S ProServices
Wed Aug 23 07:25:17 PDT 2017
Google Maps Continues to Morph For online search, Google Maps is becoming the go-to place for everything from finding a website, directions to a business, and reviews. You can see bike paths, check the traffic, and share your location with your friends. Google Maps allows you to contribute business information, and you can even become an expert local guide. You can create a map of your favorite places, embed it, and share it with others. What next? It was recently announced that Maps have become more interactive with Google Maps Q&A. In other words, you’ll be able to chat via a maps business listing. This tells more about how it works: Google brings Q&As to Google Maps | TechCrunch Starting now, when you find a place in Google Maps, for example, you can scroll down in the business’ listing and find the new Q&A section between the business’ details like phone numbers and the “popular times” widget. Unsurprisingly, you’re not likely to find any questions there yet (and I don’t think there’s a prize for asking the first question), but that’ll likely change over time. Google is also encouraging business owners to use this for an FAQ section, and the company notes that business owners will get a notification when somebody asks a question. Read the full post here: Google brings Q&As to Google Maps This new development for Google Maps is only available via mobile. Once you have searched for a location, you touch More Info at the bottom, which takes you to the business listing. Scroll down past the option to claim the business and you’ll see a box for Questions & Answers. Enter your question or comment and click post. You can even upvote information so people know it was helpful. The following video shows how the Q&A works: There has been speculation for quite some time that Google Plus, the social network owned by Google, is eventually going to fold. Many were surprised when they rolled out an updated version of Google Plus at the beginning of 2017. However, the 550 million active users on Google+ doesn’t compare to the 1 billion daily users of Facebook. So, how can they make their platforms more social? We all know Google is constantly morphing, and two places in particular these changes are happening is with Google Maps and Google My Business listings. Earlier this summer they added the ability to post about events, products, and services directly to Google Search and Maps. These posts are basically like blogging directly on your business listing, providing helpful content for people searching for a business like yours. They also offer a messaging app for mobile, where users are able to send questions about your business. The business owner can set up auto-responses when they are busy and follow up with the potential customer as soon as they are available. You can read more about this feature that was fully rolled out around a month ago: Google Messaging Rolling Out to More Dashboards The product allows the business to “listen” to the messages either via SMS or Allo. Customers are advised on the typical business response time. Google has been giving business owners more and more reasons to visit the front page of Google for their brand search. It seems that with Messaging, Google is attempting to give consumers a reason as well. See the full post here: Google Messaging Rolling Out to More Dashboards My point is that it almost seems like they are transitioning from Google+ to social features within Google Maps and Google My Business listings. The mobile revolution is behind a lot of the updates, and it only makes sense to focus on those users.

Steam Pub & Restaurant in Southampton PA engaged with us to boost their online presence and increase private party leads. In the first month we set up tracking and analytics to set a baseline for the current incoming lead flow. They were acquiring 4-6 leads per month when we started. Our strategy focused on key fundamental elements: Landing page optimization for conversions Organic search traffic for event based keywords Pay Per Click Campaigns targeting local customers ready to book First step was redesigning their lead capture page. Here is a before and after screen shot of each. Next step was keyword search engine optimizing their landing pages for Google organic search. We focused on different occasions like baby showers, rehearsal dinners, birthdays, etc. In this example we captured both our Adwords campaign and the top ranking spot for the organic search. Once the organic search results reached the top spot, we added negative keywords in the Adwords campaign to save money from wasting clicks on keywords we already rank best. The results – 850% Increase in Leads Steam Pub & Restaurant now averages over thirty leads every thirty days and growing. March is on pace to have over 40 leads.

What is Adwords Quality Score & Why Does it Matter?
by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group
Thu Jun 22 07:29:57 PDT 2017
We wanted to drop a quick note about Adwords quality score and why it matters so much in your PPC campaigns. Most business owners we speak with have tried adwords. Most say it is too expensive and doesn’t yield results. Most have no idea there is a quality score in adwords, nor what it is. In a recent Adwords campaign for a local real estate client, we were able to lower cost per click, which increased total clicks using the same daily budget. More click for your buck. During the first week of the campaign we optimized the ads and landing pages to the keyword targets. Once we could see which keywords had the best quality score, we paused the low quality keywords and let the 8-10s take the budget. This simple process lowered our cost per click by 80 cents and we were able to almost double the clicks we received per day at the same $20 budget. Here are Google’s own words about quality score: About Quality Score Quality Score is intended to give you a general sense of the quality of your ads. The 1-10 Quality Score reported for each keyword in your account is an estimate of the quality of your ads and the landing pages triggered by them. Three factors determine your Quality Score: Expected clickthrough rate Ad relevance Landing page experience So, having a high Quality Score means that our systems think your ad and landing page are relevant and useful to someone looking at your ad. This article explains how Quality Score works. Quality Score is based on past performance data Quality Score is an aggregated estimate of how well a keyword has performed overall in past ad auctions. Based on this data, each of your keywords gets a Quality Score on...

Zero Google Rank to #10 in One Day
by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group
Sun Mar 19 09:14:16 PDT 2017
I wanted to quickly share with you some results from a new client we just brought in to our Philadelphia SEO Digital Group portfolio. Restaurants need lead generation for private events and groups. It helps fill space and adds tremendous value to their top line revenue. James restaurant in Center City Philadelphia is no different. The following results are not typical. Usually it takes time for SEO to kick in and the website to start gaining rank on the first page or two. On March 16th, we worked our magic on the James Restaurant website and I was pleasantly surprised to see after one day of optimizing their rank jumped from no rank, to #10 on the highest spot. We are only 10% into our regular SEO program and happy to see immediate results. They are now ranking better than a close competitor, who has a few years lead on them and many more backlinks. We’ll update this post as we improve their SEO and get them ranking for specific keywords which will help generate private dining leads.

2017 Digital Marketing To Do List
by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group
Thu Jan 26 05:44:19 PST 2017
It’s a new year and the world around us changes evermore rapidly when it comes to keeping up with marketing trends and technology for your business. We break down the top items you’ll need to focus on right now to improve your top line revenue this year. 1. Goals – Have a Purpose This is the #1 area where most businesses fail in their marketing efforts. It’s like driving your car with no destination in mind. It’s sounds silly, but a majority of businesses are not planning properly and setting goals, then tracking their progress towards the goals. I’m not just talking about top line revenue goals like, “We need to gross $3 million this year.” Yes, that’s a goal and it’s a great start, but how are you going to get there? Especially if you only did $2 million in 2016? So where can you improve? Can we set specific goals to grow the business? Improve marketing and lead generation? Expand into a new business line? Target an additional industry with our service offerings? Invest in Facebook Ads or Adwords campaigns for targeted marketing audiences? 2. Tracking and Return on Investment (ROI) What is a lead worth to your business? What is the life time value of your customers? You learned to set your goals above. Now let’s run programs to meet those goals and track which pieces of the programs are getting the best results, for a profit. If you can see through analytics that spending $10 on a pay per click ad with Facebook generated $200 in business for you, how much would you continue to spend on that Facebook ad? The answer is “All of it until you are sold out!” Because it’s working, you can see it in the tracking, so scale it up. ...

SEO is Farming, Facebook Ads & Google Adwords are Hunting
by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group
Sun Mar 19 10:11:55 PDT 2017
When it comes to digital marketing, my opinion is strong on integrating both long term and short term tactics to help a business grow. SEO – Search Engine Optimization – Long Term Search engine Optimization usually takes time to gain rank on the first page for Google and Bing search results. This long term strategy, when properly executed, pays off for many months and years. Having your business listed in the top 5 to 10 spots on important keyword searches will gain you more traffic and hopefully more customers. It takes weeks, if not months or longer to gain first page rank. There are many factors involved and competition for the keywords is something you will need to understand. The more competitive keywords you target the longer it might take to rank. It is absolutely worth the wait and you should start this tactic now, if you have not already. Google Adwords – Short Term Google Adwords are a quick way to buy clicks and show up on top for competitive keywords. Use Adwords while you are trying to rank organically. You will see immediate results, but it is not cheap. You will pay per click each time someone clicks your search ad, so make sure the landing page they hit is designed properly to convert. I suggest using a Google Certified Partner to execute your Adwords campaigns. You could waste a lot of money trying to figure out Adwords and how to optimize their keyword phrase matching versus broad match. Facebook Ads – Short Term Facebook advertising is incredible for short term marketing wins. We have great success running ads targeting custom audiences and interest groups. Don’t confuse Facebook Ads with boosting page posts though. I personally feel that page post boost are a waste of money if you are...

The Shift From Products to Platforms
by Lori Smith @ S&S ProServices
Mon Jul 31 14:41:07 PDT 2017
Finding a way to compete in today’s marketplace isn’t easy. Not only do you have to battle against the retail giants of the world, but finding a way to be noticed in the online space is another challenge in and of itself. The shift from products to platforms is one way entrepreneurs are gaining traction. In fact, some companies are skipping products altogether and are moving toward a platform-centric approach because it offers more opportunity to scale. In this article, the authors discuss the implications of some well known firms moving toward this option: What will business technology look like tomorrow? The second is a shift from products to platforms. Many people encounter evidence of this every day. The largest cab service owns no vehicles (Uber), the biggest hotelier has no property (Airbnb), the most comprehensive retailer holds no inventory (Alibaba) and the most valuable “media” company creates some content but not much (Facebook). There are more than 2.2m apps in Apple’s store, almost none of which the company developed itself. Platforms are a way for companies to create marketplaces that allow both sides of the transaction to flourish—while the firm, as gatekeeper, enjoys a tidy revenue stream. This is hard to pull off. The platform must ensure that standards are high, and also attract different sets of participants (like drivers or app developers on one side and customers on the other). But platforms are very valuable when they work, since they scale beautifully in a digital setting. The meatiest part of the book is the treatment of platform economics, replete with demand-curve charts. Read the full post here: What will business technology look like tomorrow? In this video, Boston University Professor Marshall van Alstyne discusses the differences between providing products as opposed to a platform. His statement that with a platform, “the value is created outside of the firm” is a key element. In other words, the users of the platform create value for other users, not just to benefit the company. If you can integrate the social factor into your business plan, you will open up many possibilities: The 3 C’s — content, commerce and community — have been playing a role in the foundation of businesses for many years but with the digital age, the need for innovation is pushing the envelope. Finding a way to balance both sides of the spectrum, with knowing what consumers want and being able to deliver it when they want it, can be a bit tricky. One of the basics of business is supply vs demand, and a platform-based model that encompasses the community is easier to scale because it is more adaptable and agile. Creating a platform out of a business that has traditionally offered products requires getting your followers on board with your new venture and building excitement. The process doesn’t happen all at once but in stages, according to research done by Harvard Business Review: Transitioning Your Company from Product to Platform Creating a new platform out of your product involves attracting a large number of users, but our research suggests that user growth isn’t linear. It occurs in stages: Structuring an external product “love group” Transforming the love group into early platform adopters Leveraging early adopters to accelerate platform adoption See more here: Transitioning Your Company from Product to Platform It can be a difficult transition to make, partly because of human nature. The old school way of doing things was to create a finished product. Another reason is that some companies are massive, with a ton of inventory and infrastructure, making it tough to change their plan of attack. With the significance of the mobile platform, you have to keep your mind open to change and be able to turn on a dime. Listening to your customers and letting them be part of the revolution can allow you to gain a competitive advantage.

Is your SEO agency a hero or a bum just taking money?

There are many self proclaimed SEO guru company’s, consultants and agencies out there. So how do you cut through the crap and figure out if your agency is working on your interests or just their monthly check? I’m not claiming to be the best at digital marketing. I am constantly learning and improving my craft to be the best I can be. Having said that, I have been running into a tremendous amount of businesses that already have an “SEO Guy” when I meet with them. Fair enough. Already have an “SEO Guy”? Investigate here to see if your website SEO Guy is helping your business or not. We all need Search Engine Optimization and I’m glad you took the first step to doing something about it. Its essential to most of our businesses in acquiring new customers. Do you wonder if its working? Do you know how to see if your “SEO Guy” is doing a good job? I need to also say, SEO is a long term solution. Rising in ranks rarely happens over night, it usually takes a few months. If your SEO Guy just started a few weeks ago, give them another month or so to get moving. Its a lot of up front work for the first few weeks. Then it picks up steam in month three to six, if properly set up. Here is my 3 step test for your current SEO agency Most websites I come across only rank for their own business brand name. Not their service offerings for which customers are searching. This blog post covers just the very basics of SEO and not all the facets involved to competitively rank your website. If you are paying an “SEO Guy” and do not pass this test, time to shop for another “SEO...

Technology and Education – A Match Made In Heaven?
by Lori Smith @ S&S ProServices
Mon Aug 14 17:51:56 PDT 2017
Technology is an integral part of our lives, and the educational system is no different. Schools are spending more than ever on tech, with over $3 billion per year being spent on digital content. In addition, public schools in the U.S. now provide an average of one computer for every five students and base much of their curriculum on ushering in 21st Century skills. Because of this, students are more engaged and motivated; therefore, learning is accelerated. Convincing educators to buy into technology and integrate it into their classroom has been a slow transformation. Sadly, the United States is still falling behind in STEM courses: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Part of the problem for teachers is a lack of training, which requires ongoing development. Another is a fault of school districts, trying to integrate technology into their curriculum without considering how it supports their learning goals. This post explains more on how this transformation is affection higher education: How Technology is Now Empowering Educators | Inc.com In fact, research shows that 70% of students want their universities to update their digital options, with 44% of the same group saying they’d be happier with their university experience if they could engage with more digital resources. With an obvious demand from students for better digital solutions, organizations that don’t engage with the latest in technology may struggle to engage with new students and grow. Read the original post here: How Technology is Now Empowering Educators | Inc.com Higher education hasn’t changed quickly enough to keep up with the shifting needs and demands of students. Even though more kids are going to college than ever before, the rising costs and the lack of tools with which to prepare them for the working world has brought colleges into the limelight. Amazon got into the education space by launching a program in 2016 where schools and other educators could upload, manage and share educational materials, providing unlimited access to first-class course materials – Amazon Education Wait List. What are some of the ways technology and education are being meshed? This video gives some great examples: Virtual and augmented reality have the potential to offer immersive learning and are well on the way to becoming a vital component of how students learn. Virtually travelling to places like the International Space Station and The Colosseum would be invaluable learning opportunities. The list of possibilities is endless! Along with 3D printing and cloud computing, the world is becoming more and more connected, better preparing kids for their future. Memorizing facts is part of the old school way, but today’s classrooms are allowing students to dive in deeper on subjects that truly pique their interest. One buzzword is personalized learning, which offers diverse variety of instructional programs that are geared toward each student’s individual needs and interests. This post offers more insight into personalized learning: Technology in Education: An Overview – Education Week Many in the ed-tech field see new technologies as powerful tools to help schools meet the needs of ever-more-diverse student populations. The idea is that digital devices, software, and learning platforms offer a once-unimaginable array of options for tailoring education to each individual student’s academic strengths and weaknesses, interests and motivations, personal preferences, and optimal pace of learning. Read the original post here: Technology in Education: An Overview – Education Week This requires an in-depth profile of each student, their goals, and setting up an individualized learning path for every person in the classroom. It also necessitates a flexible environment and grading system, based on mastery of a topic and not a letter grade comparing one student to another. As a former educator, this sounds a bit overwhelming. It would make sense to utilize digital platforms that allow this process to happen through guided tutorials, so the students are partially responsible for facilitating their own individual learning goals.
Does Traditional SEO Offer No Real Value?
by SEO Team @ COFORGE Marketing – Forging better brands
Sun Sep 10 18:00:38 PDT 2017
SEO is about being “seen” by the right people, and a lot of agencies do that well. The strategy’s so dominant that it can turn into the only form of digital marketing. This is partly because SEO has become an umbrella of tactics rather than a singular method. But it says a lot about how [...]

Case Study – Sculpere Yoga & Ballet – Lead Generation
by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group
Tue Feb 07 12:23:57 PST 2017
On January 27th, 2017 we ran a 3-day campaign for Sculpere Ballet Body & Yoga Mind, a Yoga and Ballet Studio owned by Cristina Espaillat, located in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia. The campaign objective was to generate leads for a free class that was being offered. We used targeted pay per click facebook ads and a quality landing page for the campaign. The first part of the process is creating a custom landing page, specifically for the campaign. The landing page we created for Sculpere is very easy to navigate, has a clear call-to-action, mobile and desktop friendly, pixeled so we can retarget, and personally branded. If you want to check out the landing page click the image to the left. If are interested in a free yoga class at Sculpere, sign up here. The next step, we created a couple different ad sets, both targeting women within certain zip codes living in the Northern Liberties area. We split tested an ad set with different zip codes against another ad set with those same zip codes but with added interests to narrow the reach. We also A/B tested the ads against one another, testing the copy, images, headline, and call to action’s within the advertisement to see which ads Cristina’s target market responded best to. An example of one of our ads can be seen here -> Sculpere set a lifetime budget of $25 for the campaign. Within those 3 days, we reached 3,282 people with their ads. On average the cost-per-click was $1. We generated 23 total link clicks, and 8 qualified leads with a very minimal budget. The final budget at the end of the 3 days was $23.34. Cristina paid $2.91 per lead. Most people waste money on Facebook ads because they don’t know the inside secrets. Imagine...
